Default Gas mileage question

I've been checking the site out for a while and saw that with all the different subjects on these trucks it looked like a great place to join up with. I've been a Dakota fan since '94 and always preferred them until I needed something bigger to tow my old cars with. So last May I bought a used '03 Ram regular cab, 2wd with a 5.7 and 3.55 gears and 118k. Overall I'm happy with the truck and it tows my cars with no problems. I knew going in that the 5.7 was not great with gas mileage but since I only live just over 3 miles from work I wasn't too worried about it. When I first got the truck the mpg's were around 12.5. It actually got 13.5 towing my car! I wondered if it would do a little better with new plus so I changed them to platinum plugs, and I bought a Hypertech tuner to see if that might help. I saw no change with any of the options it offered. The engine still had oem plugs in it and I think they were the originals because while it had the factory number they had worn down to almost double what the gap should be. Well I thought the new plugs should help but the mpg stayed the same if not go down a little. With the cold weather and winter grade of gas it's now down to about 10.5! Shouldn't I do a little better then this or is that more or less normal? And I do know that that the cold and different blend gas will affect the mileage. As hard as it is to keep my foot out of the power this thing has I use a light foot on the go pedal. I was wondering since the plugs had worn down so much, and with the now 122k on it could the injectors also wear to the point where it would affect the mileage? I guess part of this is that I was spoiled with my low mileage '04 Dakota 3.6 5 speed that I got 18 to 20 with. So what do you think? Is this the way it is or is there anything else I could try to help it improve some. With the mpg's the new trucks are advertising it's become very tempting to just of out buy a new Ram. And the would be my first and only choice. Thanks for any ideas you may have.

I am not an expert and I only got my Ram a couple of days ago, but it is a 2005 with 53k miles and that is about the mileage I am getting. I would think a tuner would help even a little. Maybe a CAI would give you a tiny bump.

I more or less suspected that was the case. I did try a max Enegry Hypertech tuner but it didn't help at all. Maybe I need to try a different one but with the prices they go for and with the one that I chose I wonder if any of them really work.

i think something might be wrong with your truck. i got an 07 power wagon (one heavy beast of a 4x4) and i get better mileage than your getting. even in the cold temps i am getting where i am in manitoba (-20 to -30 celcius even sometimes down to -45) and i'm still getting 10-14 mpg and closer to 16 mpg on the highway. it seems like your engine may be working too hard. my cousin has a 2010 ram r/t with the 5.7 and he is getting a consistent 19 highway and 16 city.

the new rams go with 40 pounds of air in the tires - try that.
