Red face Careful What You Try To Buff Out

Yesterday after having washed the truck and preparing to remove some minor scratches I came across two identical swirls/arcs in the paint. These were on the tailgate just below the upper leading edge. To me they looked like someone had taken a rotary polisher to the tailgate.

In speaking with my DIL she advised that she does not allow any polishers in their garage and any sort of paint work, etc goes to an outside contractor. At that point we figured it happened at either the plant or the body vendor (box liner)

Today I went to try and buff our these marks, using a polish and there was no difference. These arcs are a characteristic of the paint (black gold pearl), which we know can change or appear to change colour.

This is just a heads up to those with that colour or if it also appears in other colours.

I have Deep Cherry Red Pearl and have the same. I also had them on my '11 with Mineral Gray paint. I figured they were reflections from the upper edge where it overhangs the tail gate as it goes away when the sun isn't hitting that area. They only appear when the tailgate is in a certain position in direct sunlight. The reason they are curved is that the over hang part is curved as well.

Do you see this when not in direct sun?

That is when I saw it, I figured that is what it is. But I did try to buff it out at first, that is why the warning to others should they get too aggressive on buffing, fortunately I caught it right away.

Yeah I had my tailgate repainted and when I went to pick it up the sun was shining on it. The owner walked out with me and saw it, he went and got his painter and it took us a while but we figured it out also.
