Yeah, maybe I'll go with the Mobil/wix.
I've used Wix plenty in the past with no problems.

I use Mobil1 high mileage 5W-30 at 6000 mile intervals and my 140,000+ mile beast still roars; hell even better than when it was new.

I gotta admit all the research I've done on this motor is scaring the crap out of me. So many horror stories about the sludge and rockers and radiators blowing up, warped heads, engine blowing after just minutes of pressure drop. I need dependable. I'm gonna be driving around in constant fear and paranoia that this thing is going to crap out at any minute. I read dozens of reports of these things just quitting with no warning at all. I'm really having second thoughts and my old man is cool with me not taking the truck if I end up changing my mind. Damn.

So, you've read dozens of negative reports, what about the thousands of 4.7's still out there that haven't had any issues? Mine included?

Dozens of reports of the engines just going dead. Dead dead.
I've spent hours upon hours reading up on these engines and been through probably hundreds and hundreds of reports of engine failure of some sort due To no negligence by the owner.
In all fairness I've also read about 4.7 Rams breaking 200k with no major engine issues.
I'm not going to damn the engine or the vehicle or the manufacturer. I'm nervous about the risk.
I need a dependable truck for work(and pleasure, heh heh).
The truck is in the shop for exploratory surgery. I'm waiting to hear the diagnosis before I make a final decision as to what to do next. I want this to be a good truck, everything else about it is great aside from the potential motor issues. It has a few of the warning signs I've read about. The clacky engine noise on cold start, the random oil pressure fluctuation on the dash.
I'm dreading the thought of having to start shopping around again, but the price tag can jump to not worth the money rapidly. Worst case if it needs a motor, the price for parts/labor on top of what I'm paying to buy the truck becomes a complete wash when at that point I could have spent the same money on something a little newer and/or with a different engine.

Don't blame you for being cautious, Rich. Better to spend a little up front than get burned in the end. Keep us posted.

I priced out worst case-new(&improved long block)@$1800-2500. Plus labor of course. Screw it, I fell in love with the old gal so it's a done deal. My old man said lets see what the final outcome is after my mechanic goes over it with microscope. If he finds anything serious my old man said he would work something out with me to off set any major repairs. For insurance I'm going to replace the oil pump, that's a definite and it also has a minor leak at the rear I'm going to take care of as well. My guy is pulling the valve covers to take a look inside and see what's what. If it were warmer out I'd take care most of the odds and ends myself but I have zero desire or ambition to do anything outside in this weather and I can't fit her in the garage at the moment due to all the clutter in there right now so I'll just have the mechanic deal with it.

Like I've said here before, check out S and J Engines up in Spokane. Bought a long block, very good quality. Being machines, there is always a chance that something will fail. Just ask the guy whose brand new Furd Ecoboost blew up on the freeway.....

So, got a decent bill of health from my mechanic. He said with regular oil changes he thinks I should get some life out of this engine, he said other than the cold clack it runs great. No missing, nothing, smooth as glass. My guy is one of the best out there, my family has been using him for like 25 years so I have total trust in his opinion and diagnosis. He is very familiar with the 4.7 and said overall they are a good engine as long as they are maintained with regular oil changes. He did do an oil change and the clack disappears within a few seconds(cold start). Other than that, ended up putting in a new steering rack, tranny service(with brand new pan) and rear service. And that's that for now. Just glad to be behind the wheel of a Ram again.

That's great news, Rich. Now, you wanna share a pic of this new beast of yours?
