I'll post here as soon as my truck arrives. Hopefully by the end of Feb at the latest.... It's still in Warren.

Bart, I will concede that there is an awful lot of computer nannyism in these new trucks. There were a number of unexpected reactions to situations that had me scratching my head.

RAM 1500 in 4 Low
So what's the point of this video? He has his truck in 4LO lock and he's idling up a hill. He doesn't have a LSD rear-end and he doesn't have a "TRUE LOCKER" front diff...., looks totally normal to me. From what I understand, unless you have a full- locker front diff, even if you had a FULL-POSI rear diff, which we don't with our trucks, all you really have is a 3 1/2 wheel drive, and even then with the Limited Slip Rear Diff, all you really have is a 2 1/2 wheel drive when it comes down to "high demand" traction scenarios. So I am not quite understanding if this is what the OP is describing as not being locked while only idling or "off the gas". If your front tires are up on the curb with the rear tires on ice, if it's in gear, slipping is slipping, like the video shows, unless it is "low speed" sensitive, unless as "described by one poster the transfer case for "4 LO" wasn't given the correct amount of time to engage. Maybe I'm missing something then.

I believe bartlett was saying neither one of the front tires was turning. If it was actually in 4 low, one of them should have been. I think he was suggesting to try 4 low with the wheels turned full lock on a hard surface to see if the driveline binds up. If this is done very much with good tires and some weight on them I would hope the clutches in the transfer case slip before a front axle u-joint breaks. I for one am not willing to find out.

I'm hoping the traction will be the weak link. Not the clutches or the u-joints.

Yeah that is weird why at least one tire wasn't turning up front, and to be more specific, I would hope when 4HI is selected, that the front diff is "NOT" diengaging while my foot is off the pedal at any speed, I understand that would be the case in 4 "AUTO", which I have in my truck also. That theory defeats the purpose of 4 "LOCK" doesn't it?

I just read this whole thread and while I admit I am a little confused, I am starting to think my outdoorsman not being available with 4auto was a good thing.

I suspect the front does disconnect at idle and also when decelerating , in 4 auto. When in 4 hi or low lock it does not disengage. The clutch in the transfer may slip if overstressed but in normal conditions it won't. I would rather the clutch slip than break a u-joint or axle. Realistically I don't think this will happen with stock sized tires, but again I am not going to try it on a surface it was not designed to used on.

I did read while surfing for more info, I think it was on Dodge Talk or something, a fellow posted after picking up a 2011 with the same transfer case with 4 auto available, he apparently went to test it for function by turning a tight turn in a parking lot while just idling under good traction, both in auto and 4 lock. He couldn't understand why in 4 lock why the thing wasn't hopping while turning so he asked the sales guy whom had no idea so he dug further and got a different sales rep to call Chrysler Canada and they indicated with the new style of transfer case it is designed to allow slippage in "extreme" scenarios like described rather than "break" something. So DonT's suspicions were probably correct, sooo.... NO, the 44-44 transfer case does not disengage while in 4 Lock while at idle.
