I got this problem yesterday. My 2001 RAM 2500 Cummins 4x4 is stuck in the driveway on ice and won't engage 4 wheel drive. Also, it has limited slip differential axles, yet on the left rear wheel spins. I tried 4 high and 4 low several times, the indicator light on the dash never came on and 4 wheel drive did not engage. Is there a fuse for this? Does the ECU need to be rebooted? It's frustrating. No sign of a problem beforehand.

I'm sorry Bartlett but you're absolutely wrong. I have the 4 auto transfer case and I promise you that 4hi and 4lo are definitely locked. I knew it for certain, but just to be sure, I tested it again after reading all your posts.

My driveway leading up to my garage is a slight incline. I also live in Canada and have a lot of ice on my driveway. If I leave it in 2 wheel drive, put my front tires just in the garage with my back tires on the icy incline, I cannot pull into my garage. I will sit there and spin.

Same test, but this time I put it in 4WD Auto. This time I can feel the back tires spin for about half a second, then the front tires grip and pull me into the garage. It's a little jerky since the front tires are grabbing after the rear tires are already spinning. I had my GF drive the truck while I watched from outside the truck, and then we switched, I drove and she watched. We both saw the rear tires spin before the front tires grabbed.

Same test this time in both 4Hi and 4Lo (both gave me the same results). The truck instantly drove into the garage. There was no spinning of the rear tires and no jerkiness. It very smoothly pulled into my garage.

I'm sorry but nothing you can say will dispute that test I just did with my truck. I witnessed it with my own eyes and felt it as well.

If need be, I can go get a video of it with my phone, but I'm not so sure the camera will properly catch everything that's going on.

I can say with 100% certainty that my truck is locked in 4Hi and 4Lo. There is no slippage required to lock the front and there is no delay

I agree. I tested it as well. I'm an old offroader. Since I'm new to Ram trucks I read the owners manual thoroughly. My interpretation of 4 wheel lock is the fancy word for 4 wheel high range. To make sure I used an Icy parking lot. And it works just like skidder says it does. We double tested it as my daughter has a 2010 Sport. Since she is new to 4X4's I took her out as well and using her truck showed her how to properly use her 4X4 system. And the bonus is that the Ram anti-spin works a lot better than the Ford Tracloc ever did.
