I have had my truck in some pretty nasty shit. It behaves just like any other 4x4 I have ever had.

I would fully expect it to.

My concern is longevity. Those clutch plates/packs are going to wear over time and when they start to wear, they will start to slip in high-traction situations.

So if you're right then what is the difference between auto and lock on the 44-44? I'm not sure you understand the difference between 4wd and AWD. Full time 4wd is different than AWD. Its starting to sound like the truck in question was getting the wrong signal to the t-case.

I would assume less pressure on the clutches.

Auto / On-demand (AWD)... light pressure.

Lock (4WD)... full pressure (but it's still not truly locked)

Well if I remember correctly, GM has been running a similar 4x4 system in their trucks since like 01 on certain models and know a few people with the "auto 4x4" option that have had no issue with the logevity and failure of the 4x4 system.

I don't recall seeing a low-range gearset in the video, so it's not a 44-44 if there isn't one. The video just shows the BW coil and clutch pack functionality that they use in all of their on-demand systems.

This whole discussion started with the OP saying the driver he was helping put his truck in 4 low lock and that when he gave it gas only the rear tires spun. He then said when the other driver gave it a little gas the front tires started to spin along with the rear. I can't help but think the driver did not give the transfer case time to shift all the way into low lock. It may have still been in 2 hi.

In my truck, it takes several seconds to go into 4 low lock. By the time the OP walked to the other truck to look, it could very well have completed the shift process after the driver stopped applying throttle and the rear tires were coming to a stop. Per the manual it helps the shifting process if the drivetrain is slowly turning and i am sure not in a bind.

In the video, whether that is the exact same transfer case as in our trucks, I don't know. I bet the clutch design is very similar. It looks like the clutch system is designed to be either engaged or disengaged, not in between (slipping). If that is the case I would think there will not be a reliability issue with the system as long as the vehicle is stock or close to stock. If someone were to have much larger than stock tires, or major performance improvements to the engine, then I would be concerned about over-stressing the clutch system and having the clutches wear too soon or even overheat. Otherwise I bet the clutches will last as long or longer than the transmission.

I do know that every time I put my transfer case into 4 lock, whether it is high or low range, it acts just like any 4x4 truck with a part time transfer case that I have ever had, seven jeeps and at least that many 4x4 trucks.

DonT, I notice your information says you have a 2014 Lone Star but your sig says it is a reg. cab long box. Which is it? To my knowledge they don't make Lone Stars in reg.cab versions, and if you really do have a reg. cab then you probably have the 44-45 transfer case (which is the reason I'm asking), which could explain the difference.

Btw, your assessment of the t-case not being engaged seems probable.

ETA: Just went to the Ram website and see that they now offer the Lone Star in a reg cab for 2014. To clarify my question then: do you have the 4 or 5 position t-case?
