all the AWD cases will not be engaged into 4wd unless the gas is pressed. go out and test this before posting what you think we did wrong. curb the front wheels, goto 4wd low lock, put truck in gear, look at rear tires. if the rears are on ice ect they will sit and spin untill you add gas pedal input.

I think I have told the story to its fullest, I dont have this case so it wont matter to me. thanks ......

Btw, your assessment of the t-case not being engaged seems probable.

ETA: Just went to the Ram website and see that they now offer the Lone Star in a reg cab for 2014. To clarify my question then: do you have the 4 or 5 position t-case?
I do have a 2014 Lone Star regular cab long box. I do have the transfer case that has 4 auto, 4 lock, and 4 lo lock as well as 2 wheel drive, I guess that would be the 5 position case.. I had the option to get that case when I ordered the truck.

The only ice I have here is in the freezer so I can't do that. I can and did go out in the soft sand and put the transfer case in 4 low and when I was sure it was in 4 low I turned the front wheels all the way to the left and let off the brake. With no throttle input the truck moved slowly in a circle. While doing so the front end was digging in and turning up sand like any four wheel drive truck or jeep I have ever had. When I put it back in 2 wheel drive and made sure it was I then tried the same circle. The truck needed a little throttle input to move but the front tires rolled smoothly over the sand instead of digging any of it up.

I have one picture of it now and I need to get more as I have changed the front bumper and added a winch. I also have a set of 17" wheels from an '03 Ram with BFG MTs for my off road tires.

My buddies 2011 sport must be defective because it has 4 auto 4 hi and 4 lo, when he is in 4lo it's locked! I saw this just last week when we were playing on an ice covered parking lot....he was on a slight incline at idle with the front and rear tires spinning

A good comparison for this discussion is that the 44-44 t-case is like a limited-slip rear diff and the 44-45, 44-46, and 44-47 t-cases are like a spool.

A rear limited-slip diff will spin both tires on the ice, but it's not "locked".

Hi All,

From the manual for the RAM 1500 2013:
"FIVE-POSITION/ON-DEMAND TRANSFER CASE
• This electronically shifted transfer case
provides five mode positions:
• Two-wheel drive high range (2WD)
• Four-wheel drive automatic range
(4WD AUTO)
• Four-wheel drive lock range
(4WD LOCK)
• Four-wheel drive low range
(4WD LOW)
• NEUTRAL (N)
• This electronically shifted transfer case
is designed to be driven in the two-wheel
drive position (2WD) or four-wheel drive
position (4WD AUTO) for normal street
and highway conditions on dry, hardsurfaced
roads.
• Driving the vehicle in 2WD will have greater fuel economy benefits as the front axle
is not engaged in 2WD.
Shifting Procedure
• Shifting between 2WD and 4WD AUTO or 4WD LOCK can be made with the
vehicle stopped or in motion at speeds up to 55 mph (88 km/h).
• Shifting between 2WD, 4WD AUTO and 4WD LOCK into 4WD LOW must be made
with the transmission in NEUTRAL and the vehicle stopped or rolling at 2 to 3 mph
(3 to 5 km/h).
NOTE:
It is preferred to have the engine running and the vehicle moving at 2 to 3 mph
(3 to 5 km/h).
WARNING!
You or others could be injured if you leave the vehicle unattended with the transfer
case in the NEUTRAL position without first fully engaging the parking brake. The
transfer case NEUTRAL position disengages both the front and rear driveshafts
from the powertrain and will allow the vehicle to move regardless of the transmission
position. The parking brake should always be applied when the driver is not
in the vehicle.

Hi All,
And here is the four position transfer case write up out of the manual for a 2013 RAM 1500:

"FOUR WHEEL DRIVE OPERATION
FOUR-POSITION/PART TIME TRANSFER CASE
• The transfer case provides four mode
positions:
• Two-wheel drive high range (2WD)
• Four-wheel drive high range
(4WD LOCK)
• NEUTRAL (N)
• Four-wheel drive low range
(4WD LOW)
• This transfer case is intended to be
driven in the 2WD position for normal
street and highway conditions, such as
dry, hard-surfaced roads.
• When additional traction is required,
the 4WD LOCK and 4WD LOW positions
can be used to lock the front and
rear driveshafts together.
• When operating your vehicle in 4WD LOW, do not exceed 25 mph (40 km/h).
Shifting Procedure
• Shifting between 2WD and 4WD LOCK can be made with the vehicle stopped or
in motion at speeds up to 55 mph (88 km/h).
• Shifting between 2WD or 4WD LOCK into 4WD LOW must be made with the
transmission in NEUTRAL and the vehicle stopped or rolling at 2 to 3 mph
(3 to 5 km/h).

Hi All,
So what I gather from these two entries is that 4 wheel lock is just that the front and rear axles are locked together. 4 Wheel low is the same as above but in low range tripling the rpm at a given speed, thus the 25 mph warning.
4 Wheel Auto for those who have it, is a limited 4 wheel function in which the rear axle must slip in order for the front to engage. How it does this is really moot.

As for the OP'S statement it is very probably as stated many times, the fact that they did not give the electronics of the transfer case a chance to send an OK to the trucks power train management system thus when the conditions were met the transfer case did it's thing and locked the two axles together.
