Default Help on deciding on correct wheel/tire

Having trouble picking tire/wheel sizes.

I will be running 5100's @ 2.8 & a Zone 1.5 BL:

I want to go with the Black Fuel Hostage 20X10 in either a -12 or -24 offset. I like the look of a rim with a deeper lip.

Problem is tire type/size, I don't want the tires sticking too far beyond the fender, and an unbalanced stance.

Yes a 35/12.50/20 tire should be fine, but the actual sizes vary in manufactures, for example

Nitto Trail MT
35/12.50/20 actually measures 35.05 high & 13.39 Wide
295/65/20 actually measures 35.47 high & 12.13 Wide

Toyo Open Country MT
35.12.50/20 actually measures 35.00 high & 13.00 Wide
315/60/20 actually measures 35.00 high & 12.60 Wide

So keeping in mind a 20x10 rim with either a -12 0r -24 offset, what would be the best tire to go with without too wide of a stance?

I am doing the BL this weekend, and waiting for the 5100's to get back in stock, once these are in I'll order the wheels/tires...

Well if you don't want to go too wide but want the deeper lip go with the -12 offset for sure. It will be tucked under the truck a half inch further than the -24 offset.

As far as tires go where are you getting those measurements from? The manufacturers website? Cause they seem a little off to me. My 35x12.5 Toyo MT's were actually 34.5x13.4 when mounted. From what I've heard the Nitto Trail Grapplers are very similar. I can't comment on the other sizes though.

Personally I would go for either the 35x12.5 Nittos or Toyos. Whatever one you think looks better... Other than that they're practically the same tire. Nittos will be slightly cheaper though.

Have you contacted the guys at Bully's Performance about the Bilsteins? Last I heard they had a bunch in stock ready to ship out. They can also get you great pricing on the wheel/tire package. Send them an email at sales@bullysperformance.com for a quote if you haven't already done so.

Yeah those measurements are from the manufactures website not the calculator, that's what's throwing me way off.

Bully's is still out of the 5100's.

I was thinking I could still get away with the 315/60 on a 20x10 -24 as it's the closet thing to a true 35/1250

Or maybe a Toyo 35/1250 on the 20x10 -12

Shame as I prefer the nittos but they are just too wide, I even went to a shop today and measured one. The guy said its only 1250'wide. I asked him for a tape measure and his jaw dropped when he saw it almost an inch more

You could run the Trail Grapplers on the 20x10 -12 offset... you'll have the clearance on the inside. It just might be a matter of trimming on the back of the inner fender which isn't the worst thing in the world. On my 1500 all I had to do was drill a few holes in the plastic fender liner and then zip tie it back to the frame just to hold it back far enough off the tire. And it was only near full lock that it was an issue.

My concern is the look of the tire sticking out too far, I'm thinking 2" max with the deepest lip on a 20x12.

Looks like my choices would be the toyo 315/60 on the -24 or the toyo 35/1250 on a 20x10 -12

if i did the nitto trails i would have to go zero offset, so they wouldnt stick out too far, not having much lip on that rim.

would ya agree?

The problem with the above is you want wheel lip but don't want it to stick too far out.
The real answer is....they go hand in hand.

If you want decent lip, your only option is really 20x10 and if you don't want it to stick too far out, you want -12 as Brandon mentioned above. With a 35" tire or equivalent, this will stick out 2" from the trucks fender

If you don't want it to stick out that far, then you have to go 20x9, 0 offset and BUT, you won't have the lip you are looking for

But 20x12?!? Forget it....I know the lip is sexy, but if you don't have the right height or don't want it sticking out 4-4.5" then stop looking at that wide of a rim

Id stick with the 20x10 -12 as it has the same lip size as the -24 and go with a slightly narrower tire.

Boomer, just to clarify you know the offset has nothing to do with the depth of the wheel right? The depth is solely on the width of the wheel. So a 20x10 -12 offset has the same size lip as a 20x10 -24 offset. It's once you step down to a 20x9 that the lip gets smaller.

As Andrew said (and what I said above) to get the look you're going for you'll want the 20x10 -12 offset with a 35x12.5 tire. Both the Nittos and the Toyo's are going to measure pretty much the same when mounted; about 34.5"x13.4". So there's no difference in size there. Just go with whatever tire you think looks better. You'll be sticking out slightly further than 2" with that set up. I would say about 2.25" to the very outside of the tire bulge.

thanks again guys. My apologies, I just want it to look correct, as I and all the rest of us work hard for our money.

On another note, A buddy called me today and saw a truck with the rims I wanted, I took some pictures. I would guess the rim is 20x10 -24 The tires are nitto 315/60

It was good to see the rim/tire in person and the actual lip of the rim, and how far the tires stuck out. They stuck out 2 1/2. I ieft a note on his truck so I could ask him what offset he was running. If he is running a -24 offset, I'll go with the -12 & nitto 315/60 to bring the tire towards the truck another 1/2. As you both mentioned, that should be exactly what I am trying to accomplish.

(I always thought the offset affected the lip go the rim)
