Trucks, trailers and converter dollies alone or in combination with a total gross weight, registered gross weight or manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating exceeding 4,500 kilograms (kg),

The above is the commercial sticker definition for ontario. See the word combined. Thanks for the correction but I didn't pull this out of my a$$. I have the commercial sticker and fully understand the law.

Also my brother is an OPP officer and he has scales in his car. He can weigh a vehicle and call for MTO if weights are exceeded. Also did not pull that out if my a$$.

Default 2014 1500 payload

Yes the key word in that being "commercial". As in vehicles being used for commercial purposes. Pulling your camper or boat to the cottage is not commercial and you do not need any special permitting or license until it exceeds 10,000 lbs.

I never said camper or boat. A utility trailer full of dirt will put you over. That is not commercial is it? I am posting useful info that is accurate. Not here to debate with you. You are right if that's what you need to hear.

No, I'm sorry it will not. Even a double axle unit loaded until it's tires are ready to pop will not put you over 10K.

Once you go over 10K on a "privately" owned trailer, you will need a non-commercial Class A. Which has it's own restrictions, and is not a full Class A.

Personally, I have had my commercial license for 28 years. Class AZ.

These are Canadian rules by the way, if I have the American members scratching their heads.

And this is why we have this peculiar market in Canada for utility trailers with a Registered gross weight of 9,999 pounds. You don't see that anywhere else.

The question to start this was about payloads, not how much you can put on a trailer before you get pulled over. The GVWR minus the actual weight of the vehicle is how much you can carry. Again, this has nothing to do with pulling a trailer.

It's not a guess. FYI. I live near Toronto and the OPP carry portable 4 corner scales now. They are cracking down on overweight vehicles. If your truck and trailer exceed or have the capacity to exceed 4500kg or roughly 10 000lbs you need a commercial sticker on truck and trailer. So towing a 3200lb plus trailer means you need commercial stickers. Almost every trailer that can hold dirt would put you in the commercial sticker range. Most people have no clue about these weight restrictions and sticker requirements and that is why they are cracking down on it now.
You are assuming nothing has been added to the vehicle since it left the factory. Anything that has been added lowers the payload. Aftermarket wheels and tires can add considerable weigh, bumpers, winches, covers, and many other things. If i put the amount stated for the payload in the back of my truck I would be about 500 pounds over the gross weight rating of my truck.

Just moved back from Ontario last summer, don't recall reading on MOT's website stating I needed "commercial" plated vehicles to haul topsoil or gravel or anything of the sort if the trailer weight was under "10,000lbs", that's the compliant weight that shifts the category I believe as others have stated.

How about those that are so pedantic about every little ounce JUST READ THE DOOR CARD? Go to a lot and check out a range of trucks with options and see what the payload is listed at.
Arguing who is smarter at thinking they 'know' the law adds absolutely nothing to it so either list an actual law, not my brother, boss, manual, etc claims or SHUT UP. It doesn't really matter what the law says about being over when the question is what the ACTUAL payload would be.

Not sure if this applies to Canada or not but in the US the door sticker is the law. Where I work at we up-fit vehicles, tool boxes, lift gates, service bodies etc We have to change out the sticker on new vehicles with a new one printed that represents the new payload. For example if the vehicle has a 1700lb payload and we add 400lbs of equipment we have to install a new sticker that now reads a gross payload of 1300lbs. We have upfitted trucks with a CC that were only left with about 600lbs of payload left once all the equipment was installed.

IMO if the door sticker on your new truck shows 1700lbs it's a reflection of the equipment that is installed on your truck. More options = less payload.
