Default I just realized I don't smell the "smell" anymore!

I was just sitting here looking at threads on the forum when I saw one talking about the infamous "smell." Made me realize that I haven't been smelling it in my truck!

It started for me around 3,000 miles (on a hunting trip, where temps were low and my truck sat for about a week or more). It lasted me right up until around 8,500 miles, but now it's gone (hopefully forever). At times, it smelled like a bucket of dead rats had been left under my hood.

I installed the in-cab air filter mod about a month ago, hoping that would help with the smells inside the cab. I think the smell was starting to really slow up at that point though. A side note on the in-cab filter: I honestly haven't noticed it helping that much. I still smell things from outside from time to time. If I had to go back, I probably wouldn't have done that mod.

I'm hoping for the same thing since the dealer seems to be no help in the smell issue. Mine started around 2000 miles...bucket of dead rats is pretty accurate.

I second the notion on the cabin air filter, I did the mod last week and even with a charcoal filter doesn't seem to do anything. I suppose if it filters out some of the dust it'll do something...otherwise prob wouldn't do it again.

I'm at 5400 miles and it is starting to be barely noticeable...I can only smell it after long drives when the engine heats up to normal operating temp.

My smell is more like stale propane!

The filter won't filter out smells, its made to keep dust and small stuff out of the hvac system.

I have a charcoal filter in mine. That's sort of the purpose of a charcoal filter (helps filter out smells). In my 15 years of owning vehicles (7-8 vehicles), I've never once had an issue with dirt finding it's way into the cab, via air vents (not anything noticeable anyway).

That's great to hear, Randy. It's too bad you had to put up with it for so long.

That's great news. Let's hope it stays that way. Always good to hear.

GuyGene, engineering at Chrysler is suggesting that the smell is caused by a reaction between the coolant and the sulphur cured compound in the rad hoses. The odd thing, though, is that not all trucks are experiencing the problem. There are quite a few posts on this forum discussing the problem.
