Default Dash Cams

I'm looking at picking up a dash cam and having it permanently installed in my 2013 Ram 1500 Laramie. Three days after I bought it someone rear ended me in it and I had barely put 200 Km on the engine myself (Picked it up used with 14,000 km on it). I'm getting a bit of a runaround from the insurance company on the issue. My insurance company agrees, I'm not at fault but the other drives insurance company is saying they haven't been able to speak with him in the 3 weeks since it happened so they wont accept blame until they do.

Does anyone have a dash cam install in any of their vehicles? If so, which model did you go for? How does it work? And did you hard wire it in?

Cheers,

Sapper

This guy has done a number of dash cam reviews.

http://www.youtube.com/user/Techmoan

I run a number of them on all my families' vehicles, depending on their needs, etc. The fact that you were rear ended suggests that you would want to install two dash cams. Do not be fooled by the ones that have two lens, one front and one back, most do not separate to cover both front and back.

Infra red may not be a good quality to have unless the lens is outside the camera as the IR will reflect off the windshield. The cost have come down so much that you can get a 1080 HD for just over $100.00.

They do not have to be hard wired but they can be. Now the guy above does not like GPS modules but myself I do as it will also record my speed which can then be used as evidence against the other guy, etc.

This is one of my set-ups.

get a cam that will accept a multi hour card for recording

recently a couple in Ontario were returning home from a trip,
a person pulled off a side road onto highway 17, the couple broad sided that vehicle, both vehicles were totaled i believe.
The dash cam was ruined, but the card was intact

here is the video

I mentioned this in another thread. Does anyone know if insurance companies are offering discounts to people who install dash cams? I think this would be a great incentive to get one.

Unfortunate that the offending driver is giving Ram owners a bad rep.

Shawn, here is what the ICBC has stated about dash cams:

However, ICBC appears lukewarm on cameras in cars. In a statement to The Province, they said the following:
“Driving is a complex task that requires our full attention. While it is not illegal to have a mounted camera in a vehicle … we don’t encourage the use of any electronic devices while driving because there is always the potential for it to be a distraction.”

As for insurance discounts, I know of none at this time, but with some companies offering discounts to having their black box installed then I can see this maybe happening soon. I say maybe because most new vehicles already have some sort of black box and we do not get a discount for them.

I understand about not using hand held devices. I haven't done any research into the cameras but wouldn't they be able to just continually record and then just overwrite old data

Seeing as though I'm born and raised in Vancouver and have dealt with ICBC for most of my life and know quite well the tactics they use, I'm pretty sure they don't want Dashcams in vehicles because it would mean solid proof of fault in a lot of different situations. Every accident I've been (four in total) with the exception of one due to a witness, they have laid 50 / 50 blame on both parties so they can jack both insurance policy rates up instead of just one drivers insurance rate. They try as hard as possible to split the blame instead of laying blame solely with one person.

That is exactly how they work. Depending on the camera they can take up to a 64 Gig micro-SD card and they will continually write in small blocks until full then they will start to overwrite the oldest data. Some have a G-force sensor which when it detects a sudden movement or collision it will then lock that particular portion/file so it is not over written.

I always recommend that the card be removed periodically and loaded into a P.C. to view that the camera is properly working, etc. and removing any of the locked files if not needed. I like the model I use because it also records the GPS tracking, speed and who is in the vehicle, it shows I am not drinking coffee, falling asleep, being distracted, etc.

On a side note to that collision outside of Kenora, I did view the full video, it definitely shows the "victim" as wandering into the opposing lane a couple of times. Even though he is not at fault in this collision I also think that the collision could have been minimized or avoided by the "victim". It just goes to experience behind the wheel, the "victim", in trying to avoid was actually looking at the other driver and that causes a person to steer toward the focal point. I feel that he could and should have steered towards the direction where the vehicle came from not where it was going.

The C.B.C. shows more of the video here

In Ontario they will look for all the reasons to jack up the price, but there are no incentives whatsoever if you use a steering g wheel lock, an alarm or dashcam.
The only question I was ever asked was if I park the vehicle in a video monitored area.
