Exclamation First oil change question

When I changed my oil I drove it up on ramps like I did on other truck and did the usual steps. However when I went to transfer the old oil into the new oil containers to return I only ended up with 5 quarts. I put in the required 7 quarts and checked the dip stick and it looks good and the pressure and oil temps are good. So am I crazy or is this normal it seems like I put in 7 quarts I should get 7 out. I used Mobil 1 and a matching filter.

iv'e been a quart low before but never two. maybe normal for a new engine, but that does seem like a lot. I would keep an eye on it. I check mine every other fill up.

Good info. What mileage did you change it at? I am looking to change mine at 3 months no even if I am still below 3000 miles for first oil change.

I had 5000 miles, my oil life indicator said I still had 50% left. I have never went that long ever before, I based it solely on that indicator.

First oil change can be done when you are comfortable doing it
Everyone has their own reasons for picking a certain mileage or time period

I just did my first oil change last night at 7500km or 4700mi and it was a little bit down also.
No oil spilled on the steering thanks to sacrificing 5 terry rags (Costco). What a bitch place to put the filter! With the truck perfectly level, I put in 5 qts, ran it for 3 minutes checking for leaks. After 10 minutes, I added more eventually winding up with a total of 7 qts (6.5 liters). It was probably close to the add mark when I started.

I found a little work around for the oil filter. I drive my truck on ramps and I can get easy access to the oil filter and slide a zip lock bag over the oil filter and unscrew it and the bag collects it all and keeps the truck nice and clean. Then take it all to auto store and recycle it.

Did my first change at 6600 miles. I was going to do it based on the indicator, but by that time I realized that I was on track for a 10,000 mile oil change and I'm just not comfortable with that especially since the factory fill is probably conventional. I now use full synthetic and change it at about 7000.
