Exclamation HELP! choosing cam, lifters, intake manifold etc.

Well i just joined today and was looking for some help unleashing some horespower out of my 318. I was looking for anyone's experience/expertise on which cam and lifters i should run and anything else that would get me around 350 hp for $1000 to $1500. part numbers or links would be appreciated!!

my truck is a 2001 dodge ram 1500 with 4.88 gears on 37's its currently in the shop getting Detroit lockers front and rear. with all this time without my baby i have been looking into doing some engine work.

The problem that you have is, to pull big power out of a 318, you'll have to build it to rev like hell. Then you have to give up bottom end grunt that you need to move a heavy truck.I would think the only way you'd get 350 hp would be with forced induction. You'd probably need better rods and pistons just to handle the power of a blower. I'm guessing a stock 318 has about 230 flywheel hp. With forged internals to handle a blower, maybe 6-8 lbs of boost headers and a good blower cam, ported heads, you probably could get 350 flywheel hp if you could get it tuned. Way out of budget. Don't take it the wrong way, but if you could find an 04- newer hemi, well they come with 345 hp and 390 ft/lbs stock. Also, hemi trucks come with the 545RFE 5 speed good for 500-550 rwhp without upgrade. I run a hot cam in my hemi, headers, custom dyno tune and probably only gained 40-50 more rwhp. With my hot cam, my bottom end is no better than stock, have to rev to get the power. Probably will raise my shift points to 6,500.

The Magnum factory heads support 400hp at 6,000rpm. Any work there will be a plus that will make it easier to hit your goal. Improved induction (M1 or Hughes/Edelbrock AIr Gap) and higher cfm throttle body will dovetail nicely with that rpm range. A hot computer-friendly cam is in order. I'd suggest calling the cam manufacturers or at least doing the online cam request form. To hit 350hp or anywhere near that at around 5,500rpm you're gonna need a pretty stout cam like CompCams 264HR-12. Don't forget the matching springs. Add a good exhaust and you'll have the major areas covered. On the carb'd 400hp 318, it would crank 349 lbs torque at 3,000rpm, so it doesn't give up low rpm power like most smallblocks do. 9 years ago Hot Rod did an article called "Junkyard Jewel: 400hp 318". It was a buildup of the LA 318. Your Magnum already has big port heads (the LA had small ports). It's a good read that offers insight into just what the 318 can do. Even though there are some considerations that must be dealt with in the computerized applications, you can still crank it out. Check out the dyno numbers. There was also a Magnum head conversion where the Magnum-ized 318 cranked out almost identical numbers.

Also a Magnum head conversion, but higher flow Mags and more cam.

On the stocker, you'll be limited to about 9psi. That'd still net at least a 40% power increase. More boost would demand forged pistons and a stronger head gasket setup, stronger crank and rod bolts.

Soo what are people running for turbos on the 318 ? Could I set one up with the same budget? 40% increase sounds good to me, I will prob still add an air gap manifold and a 52+mm throttle body working with the turbo setup . Do I have to change anything else besides just installing the turbo intercooler controller etc.?

tuner, and maybe injectors. Upgrading your ignition system might not hurt either. I know MSD makes plug and play setups specifically for Turbo or Forced Induction. The exhaust will need looked at too. More Air/Fuel volume in requires more volume out. A marginal catalytic will quickly clog up and crap out if you over tax it with a turbo. Depending on the mileage of the motor, it may need to have rings/bearings refreshed as well.

The 40% increase would assume all the internals are in good working order. Throwing a turbo on a dogged out powerplant with 300k miles on it wouldn't see that 40%, and if it did, it wouldn't see it for long.

So I would need a custom tune and injectors? Any idea how many pound injectors would be adequate for my application? On the other hand the exhaust is already takin care of I did a cat delete straight pipe to an open magniflow no restrictions.also the engine was recently swapped in the truck and gone through it has 93k of grandma driven miles runs strong!

Injectors would depend on what you have and what the turbo units requirements are.... The tune is going to be necessary without question
