Question Newbie with questions

Hello, I have a few questions here......
I have never owned a diesel powered vehicle in my life. I recently purchased a new travel trailer and will be moving from the west coast to the east coast, that being said I will be going over the Rockies which are pretty steep in places, and the vehicle I have now wouldn't do justice on those draws. So let me bring you up to speed a little.
I live in San Diego and will be going to N.C., the truck I have now a Toyota Tacoma Prerunner 2wd w/ 3.4l 6 cyl does ok on the flats. My trailer is a 18.6ft Forest River light weight trailer dry it's 3800 lb. locally its OK.

Now, my questions are wide and varied so please bare with me as I'm new to this stuff.
I can't or won't pay the price for a new Dodge ram diesel as I think they are way overpriced. And I know the old statement of "why buy someone Else's problems".

So here we go.....
1 is there anything wrong with buying a diesel with 80-150,000 miles on it?

2 Did Dodge have any issues with the 2006-7 model yr 1500 with the 5.9 engine in it?

3 What transmission ( name type) did they put in them ( auto) and were there any issues with it? I know from looking around that there were multi gear tyranny's installed.

4, what would be a good fair amount of mileage
i would get from a vehicle with this engine in it.Both per mile and life of the engine?

5 what is a fair price for one of these trucks at 8 yrs old?????

any help would be super. I'm sure I have more questions but they escape me right now...... Thanks BayouKid

What do you think your total weight will be in the trailer? 3800lbs dry is not that bad even if you add 4000lbs to it your still at 7800lbs. You are starting to get close to maxing out a 1500 hemi with 3.92 gears. You must not have to much stuff if you are choosing to move yourself so if it was me and my choice I would say a diesel ram is a great choice and would laugh at a load like that. However a solid 2500 with a hemi would do just fine, you won't get the greatest gas mileage compared to the diesel. You have to ask yourself what are you gonna do with a diesel after you finish your move across country. If your Tacoma pulled the trailer ok then a diesel would be happier pulling a loaded trailer and your Tacoma 8). This is just my opinion and I'm sure someone with more experience in this scenario will comment as well. Tito answer your original question about diesels, I definitely would inspect any diesel truck your gonna buy. Diesel trucks are generally used hard, like for heavy towing and hauling. Make sure it drives okay and the transmission is solid and shifts normally. If you see a fifth wheel or gooseneck attachment or aftermarket trailer brake this will usually mean that truck was used for heavy hauling often. There is nothing wrong with heavy hauling however if the truck has around 100,000 miles like you stated then it's very important it was maintained correctly. If the truck was used and maintained well then you should have no problems, if it was used and abused then know you know why they are selling it. Diesels will last you a long time if maintained well however they do get expensive fast if it was not maintained well. Sorry for such a long post, I get a little OCD on a topic I like 8). Hope this helped you out a little
