Default Fuel gauge issue

I'm having issues with my fuel gauge not reading properly on my 97 ram 1500. I believe I need to replace the sending unit but I have never done this before. What I would like to know is how to depressurize the fuel system safely before I begin the project? Any suggestions before I begin working on it? Thanks
