I don't go to the track but it was the best mod I've done other than the turbo.

I have the same gear and want to do the same swap. I think it will give me SOME of the low end oomph I was wanting from the now in question to boost my truck. I think its the route I will be taking now.

Another option is to run 3.92s and go with a shorter tire like a 30".

What does the shorter tire do?

A shorter tire is the equivalent of going with a numerically higher gear. You also get the benefit of the shorter tire weighing less.

Google "rpm calculator" and play around with different gear and tire height combos to see what your rpms will be at whatever speed you choose. I usually pick 70 mph.

Changing the rear gears will throw the speedometer off. I want to change mine too but I am not messing with it til I get a tuner to take off the top speed limiter. I was going to put nitrous on my truck but if I do that it will just top out at 105 and shut down before I cross the 1/4 mile. Changing the gears I bet you could have the dealer correct the speedometer but the won't take off the speed limiter. The best bet is to do gears and get a tuner. The gears will make the truck much more snappy off the line. I'm thinking 4.10 or even 4.56 in my truck. I tow a huge boat with mine and the extra low end would really help get the boat moving faster off the line. The Hemi pulls it but it takes it a while to get into the power band. 4.56 would be great for me but I dread the fuel economy drop on the highway.

A gear swap on a 4G Ram requires no setting adjustments, and will not throw off the speedo/odo
The speed sensor is in the diff ABS tone ring so only a tire size change requires a re-calibration.

Diablo and Bully Dog tuners are capable of adjusting tire size,
neither have an option for axle ratio changes.

Old Tire size/ New Tire size x Gear ratio = effective gear ratio

My truck cam stock with 275/60R20's 933" Tall) and 3.55 Gears
When I mount my 275/45R17 927.5" tall Drag Radials for a day at the track
My effective gear ratio is about 4.25:1

33/27.5 = 1.2 x 3.55 = 4.26:1

But I also drop about 20 lbs of weight per corner (80lbs total)
Lighter 17" wheels and lighter drag radials are only 60lbs ea.
Stock 20's with 33's are about 80lbs.

Some other factors to consider,
lower ride height = better aerodynamics
better traction with softer compound sticky drag radials
lower rotating mass due to smaller diameter wheel/tire.

...all together = about 5 tenths (a half second) quicker over a quarter mile.
