I do not agree with the swap either, but there is precedence for negotiating with terrorists and so not the first time it has been done. Cases in point, Jimmy Carter negotiated with Iranian extremists in an attempt to free American hostages there. Ronald Reagan’s administration was responsible for the weapons for prisoner sway that became known as the Iran Contra scandal. Bill Clinton negotiated with the Taliban in at attempt to get them to turn over Osama Bin Landen and other al Qaeda leaders. The talks to release Bergdahl seem to follow in this tradition.

Well, I'm definately not infavor of giving up 5 "top leaders" of the Taliban for a PFC. (He was promoted to SPC in 2010 and SGT in 2011.)

But think about it from this point of view. Operations in Afganistan are winding down and we still have a butt load of prisioners that eventually were going to have to do something with, we can't hold these prisioners forever without some kind of trial.

Now we've held the these five Taliban for many years, I would think that our interrogators would have extracted all the information that they could extract from someone. Again being that we do not hold people indefinately without a trial, we have to do something with them. Why not trade them for a fresh source of intel.

You know that Bergdahl will be interrogated or as the military calls it, "debriefed". I doubt that the Taliban welcomed Bergdahl with open arms and told him all their secrets, but he had to have seen something and hear things.

But now that he is back in military custody, he should be tried as a deserter and sentenced to die (IMAO).

Thank you,
MikeDCop and Desert Storm MP Vet

mikedcop, in all other nondeclared wars, pow exchange occurred after hostilities ceased and we were shipping our guys home. there is no precedent for this type of trade.

Exactly, both of the traitors! I'd be happy to supply either the rope or the ammo. Former US Army.

Maybe this whole thing is a failed diversion. Just a few weeks ago the VA scandal broke out. Anyone remember that? It seems the media forgot about it as well.
Maybe the POTUS thought since the veterans were getting screwed by the VA, he could get brownie points with vets/military by "rescuing" a "hero" who served with "distinction"??
All eyes are off the VA scandal. All eyes are off Bengahzi. All eyes are off Asad's re-election. All eyes are on Bergdahl.
