Default Break-In Question.

Picking my truck up Saturday from a dealer 300, mostly flat, highway miles away.

Heard/read that while breaking in a new vehicle, you should avoid sustained rpms for long periods of time.

How would you drive it home? Would 4 or 5 hrs of constant 1600 rpms be bad for the initial break in?

Personally, I would take my time and find some back roads to very the speed for at least the first 100-200 miles. I'm funny about that though, when I picked up my truck I drove about 20 miles on the highway, but I made sure I didn't go over 55 or 60.

People come up with all kinds of "break-in" advice. Go get your truck, vary the speed a bit if you like. You'll most likely have some stop and go speeds anyway. So please don't worry.

I picked up my truck and drove home and it was a 550 mile Journey. Well didn't use any cruise control, drove 75mph max, and like valley racer said, just varied my RPMs slightly. Which it will anyways if you don't use cruise. Above all enjoy your drive in your new truck.

I have 300 miles on mine so far, break in says give it a few full throttle bursts, took mine on the highway once so far, mostly just around town.

Just enjoy the drive home. But don't lock the CC in at any given speed. Use your foot, and drive.

You can use the manual shift buttons on the steering wheel to vary the rpms. Or randomly change your speed. Congrats on your truck.

I believe that the Owners Manual reads to do a 300 mile break in

Vary your speeds,
No idling for very long
No Towing for 500 miles, if possible
you should have no reason to Rev the engine quickly

Enjoy the feel of the Ram

It's not like it's 1970! Drive it and don't worry about it. i had a 750 mile drive home. lots of highway and I had at least one time passing a car at about the 400 mile mark where i was "over the speed limit a bit" shall we say. Truck runs great. No need to baby these things.
