Default Oil question?

What kind of oil have you guys been running in your Hemi's? I have been a Mobil 1 guy for a long time, but I see Chrysler recommends mopar or Penzoil. Anyone use the Penzoil ultra platinum synthetic 5w-20? Always had good luck with the Mobil 1.

Mobil 1 but will likely switch over to the Pennzoil on the next oil change due to the Chrysler recommendation.

Well of course Chrysler is going to recommend their brand (Mopar) and I suspect there may be some marketing/corporate agreement behind the Pennzoil recommendation, which is not to say there is anything wrong with Pennzoil. I see no reason why if you have used an oil for a long time, have been happy not to continue to us it, unless in doing so like Huntergreen, you find a performance issue. I started with Amsoil OEM and have switched to Amsoil Signature.

The place to learn about oil is www.BobIsTheOilGuy.com (bitog) otherwise you just end up with a bunch of guys saying "my car likes <brand>" which are meaningless unless they've been doing oil analysis and tear downs.

Pennzoil Platinum is well respected, but you might go up one notch in viscosity. US OEMs generally spec oil a bit too thin because of CAFE standards.

Hard to go too wrong with Mobil1. It's not the best, but it's relatively inexpensive and the quality is ok.

Pick a couple oils that folks are talking about and so some searches on bitog. In a couple minutes you'll end up with a shortlist of good oils. OEM branded oils, like Mopar, is often quite good. Truth can change rapidly tho. Oil additive packages change often and w/o warning.

Pennzoil ultra platinum is a much pure oil. This is what I will use on my next oil change. I use quaker full synthetic and it runs pretty well.

I run castrol full synthetic 5w-20 in my hemi. Way I look at it for a truck as nice as our Rams I won't skimp on oil to save a few dollars.

mopar oil is made by pennzoil hence the recommendation of one or the other.

my last truck (2005 f150) had a lifetime ford oilchange package. brought it into the dealer for every change with motorcraft oil and filter. by 60k she had a nasty top end tick....

my father still has his 2004 f150 with the same engine. he has been putting heavier oil and an extra quart in at every change. his motor is quiet as the day he got it....

That was probably a design issue as much as anything. I had an 07 Expedition with the 3v 5.4. Used whatever bulk oil at my local service station for 7 years and 130k miles. Never a tick, and never used a drop of oil. Pre-07 5.4 3v's where known to have bad cam phasers and they'd chatter.

I don't worry about oil much anymore. I bought the oil change package from my dealer. Basically $18/oil change. I'll bet the rest of the truck will fall apart long before the Hemi dies from not using a top shelf oil. I won't keep it much past 100k anyway.

I've used various synthetics in the past, I've just never noticed a difference to warrant the change and I've never tried to get the last mile out of my vehicles, I usually get tired of them long before they wear out.

I do use synthetic in my boat, but that's what the engine manufacture recommends and it only get's changed once a year.

But yeah, oil is not that expensive, so if it makes you feel better....
