Default 2011 Ram 4.7 engine upgrades

I just purchased a 2011 Ram 1500 4.7 (310 HP/330 torque) 4x4 with a tow pkg. I am concerned about capabilities of towing a two horse trailer over the mountains. I also fill my trailer with hay during growing season and tow over the same mountains. I have see advertisements for resistor chips and programmers to increase performance. I don't want to get stupid with mods but I would like opinions on which direction I should go. I have used K&N filters in the past and will do so with this truck.

Chips are useless
Programmers are good as long as used properly. Custom tuning is the best, however I'm sure there are canned tunes that work well for TOWING on 87-89 fuel

Depending on how steep of grades, be prepared to be losing speed.

I highly recommend a superchips tuner for you. Custom tunes are great as said but the superchips canned tunes are wonderful, and you can change them as needed (performance vs towing, etc).

In case you don't know, canned tune just means it's not "custom" tuned to your specific truck. They do the tuning on a car in their warehouse then send out the tuner preloaded with a "canned" tune when you buy it. I have the superchips on my 2010 4.7L and it's great.

I believe it adds 65lb ft of torque(max, not peak). It's about $300 and takes about 15 mintues, and you don't even open the hood. Beat that, lol.

How much weight are you pulling? And do you have 3.55's or 3.92's?

I've pulled about 5,000-6,000 lbs in an enclosed trailer(wind resistance is worse than weight IMO on the highway) with mine on the superchips tow tune(need to use 91 octane or higher with this) through the mountains pretty easily at about 70mph. I got about 12-13mpg. If you are pulling more than this weight you may struggle.

Also, this is just my opinion I guess but if I were you I'd go with a drop in air filter vs the whole kit. You can get a higher flow, reusable/washable filter for about $50 and the stock airbox is already a very good design. Save some money. You won't gain a whole lot of power with a CAI kit. I also recommend a dry filter vs an oiled filter(just for cleanliness). I use an airaid dryflow filter. There are others as well.
