Picked up the truck with 7 miles on it. Noticed the 2-1 hard shift/thump on the test drive....almost didn't take delivery.
But prior to taking delivery I read somewhere on here that driving in tow-haul mode for a while helps it, so I drove it in tow-haul for about 100 of my 350 mile drive home from the dealer.
Seemed fine for the next 700 miles but it happened to me again yesterday and today. Going to put some miles on it this weekend in the mountains and will put it in tow-haul again for a while and see what happens.

I'm really not too concerned about it.

At about 5600 miles it seems to happen only when braking hard on mine. The first few miles it was all of the time. I'm not bothered with it as well and like the affermative shifts even 2-1 is a little harsher. Compared to my 2010 5-speed which was always hunting for the right gear the 8-speed is a 1000x more enjoyable.
I do prefer the thump from the tranny then the hunderds of thumps from tennisball sized hail (Every panel, paint is cracked, windshield broken, grille broken, mirror loose. Insurance will not total it as there are 48000 cases due to this storm. 3 month old resprayed vehicle woohoo not)

Got to like the paper thin sheet metal on these new trucks.

I have a MY13 with the eight speed and 3:21s and I don't have any bump, in fact, the transmission is so smooth I can only tell gear shifts from the exhaust note. Slowing down, I do feel the downshifts from the vehicle slowing but no bumps.

The MY13 forum is full of happy eight speed transmission owners, to say this is an inherent problem is not correct. On my last service visit to the dealer, they updated the software in both the engine and transmission controllers. The transmission had issues with the one/two shift going both ways after the software updates, it was very noticeable, the transmission acted like it didn't know if it wanted to be in 1st or 2nd. The dealer reset the transmission controller so it would re-learn shifting just like a brand new truck. So far, silky smooth shifts in both directions.

Ask your dealer to reset your transmission so it can re-learn shifting, that may be all it takes to fix the issue, it is worth the try. As soon as I get the chance to look at my service work-order, I will edit this post and tell you what they call this reset, it is some fancy tech-no-bable.

The work order calls it "transmission reset adaption values".

My 2013 has no such ill behavior. LOVE THIS TRANNY!!! I've seen fuel economy that I never thought I'd ever see in a 4x4 half ton v8 truck, and yes, I'm one of those that traded in a 1 year old not really a 6 speed auto for my '13 8 speed. The MCE that I missed when forced to buy early was a major want, and the transmission was what sealed the deal.

There's NOTHING wrong with the 8 speed !!!!!

The torque converter locks up in first gear, and doesn't let go until you are almost stopped. SO... you feel the down shifting !!

This is a modern euro spec trans. It's not your normal USA made "Slush box."

It shifts aggressively... and I love it !!

That sucks, dude. Hail is my biggest fear. Who is your insurance provider? Not totaling a vehicle that messed up is just wrong.

Hu?? If it was tennis ball sized... he's lucky to still have glass in the truck. (and a roof on his house)
