Default Switch Gears from 3.21 to 3.91?

Well I was one of the (un)fortunate few who ordered my truck with 3.55's and got 3.21s due to a shortage, I got an extended warranty and took delivery of my truck because my other vehicle was not cutting it for the growing family.

A year later, I am regretting that decision (gear wise). I love my truck, but it is sluggish, and with the 35's going on next week, will only get worse. I have been scouring the internet looking to see what was needed to go from 3.21 to atleast a 3.91, I was wondering if anyone has done this on a 13 yet? Did you have to change out the front too or just the rear? Does it auto-calibrate or does the speedo need to be adjusted?

Any help is appreciated!

Chris

I have not done it on a 13 yet, however, you will have to do it on the front as well.

Also, on the '13s it is pretty expensive to swap gears. You can't just pop the old ones out and the new ones in, because the carrier or ring gear is welded to something or something like that. I'm not sure about the specifics though since I'm happy with my 3.21s and haven't looked into a swap. Hopefully someone will chime in with more details.

I'm assuming you have the 6 speed? With the 4.71:1 1st gear in my truck (8 speed) I can spin the tires on dry pavement, even with my 3.21 LSD diff.

Can't answer your questions but with the 35s if you only have the 6 speed you should go with 4.10s or it will still be just as sluggish.

I have 3.55 in mine with the 6spd and I really wish I had 4.10... Dammit why does it have to be so difficult to change... my 35s make my truck pretty sluggish from down low

I agree 4:10 with 6 speed, a 8 speed however not sure, would say should be safe with 4:10.

With these differentials, it's not just swapping ring gears and pinions. The entire axle assembly has to be replaced. And also remember, the front axle also has to be replaced as well.

ring gear is welded to the carrier in the ZF rear ends. i believe
older AAM rear ends had the ring gear bolted onto the carrier, 2002 ? - 2010 Ram

2011 they started with the ZF rear ends

I too feel the same way i have 8spd 4x4 with 3.21s . I have not done swap yet but thunder is right on 12 and up the front carrrier is welded to the rear gear so you will need to buy and whole new housing from the factory loaded with the 9.92s. or buy a 2010 front end which arent welded and put where gear you want in to match rear but you need a different front drive shaft yoke. as far as rear goes you can buy just the rear gear but it has to be mopar because of the bolt patter. no aftermaket companys make on yet. at least that i have seen. Hope that helps.
