I've used both Valvoline & Pennzoil Full Synthetick 5w-20. I've been very happy with it so far & I've had zero issues thus far.

As for filters, I've used Mopar, Wix & I currently have a Bosch. I'll probably go back to Wix next time.

I tried QuakerState Full Synthetic (met dexos1 standards) in another vehicle with a Hemi & I had nothing but issues. I just looked it up & it's a Shell product. I've had nothing but bad luck w/ that company. I should have known!

And after further reading, Pennzoil is also a Shell product! I'm so confused!

The day I brought my 2011 truck home a month or so ago. The first thing I did was change the oil. I only use Mobil 1 synthetic. I firmly believe that using this has allowed me to get 307,000 trouble free miles on my 2001 Durango that is now my wife's daily driver.

In a severe wear test study that can be found at: http://speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30483 He ran his tests at a real world temperature of 230 degrees F. I am an engineer and I was impressed with how he ran these tests. The Pennzoil Platinum Ultra 5W-30 took the top honors failing at 115,600 psi pressure. 5W-20 did not do as well failing at 86,270 psi. Mobil 5W-20 and 0W-20 both failed around 95,000 psi. Would not hesitate to use either one of these two brands of Synthetic motor oils. Castrol Edge and Quaker State Ultimate also did very well. The expensive Royal Purple synthetics did not fare well at all on this wear test.

Thanks for posting the link. Kinda confirms what I've seen in using Mobil 1. Mobil 1 takes a lot of crap on the internet, but I've run it hard on the road courses at much higher temps then in the test and had good results. Oil shearing is my main concern and I would have liked to see the test run at 265-270 for the top oils anyways.

Thanks again.

This is all hogwash. My family has used different brands of oil, everything from havoline to valvoline. The trick is to recognize which oil performs best in your vehicle, or other words which vehicle likes which oil. Engines and engine oil sure have changed allot over the years, everything from additives to process control in manufacturing, and for engine we have to deal with tighter tolerances which means more friction. I've noticed on some engines such as the 318 that conventional oil tends to burn up and turn to varnish, especially if you have ever heated the engine from towing. For that you are going to want to go to synthetic. For say the corvette engine you would want to stay synthetic, but as far as brand use what the manufacture recommends. However, if it doesn't work out do not be afraid to experiment a little. You want to know how things go between your engine and the oil, take off the valve covers every so often. Try removing a lifter and inspect the lifter if it is seized. All this lab testing is great stuff, but completely unnecessary. To think of it we have our oil lab tested more often than our blood at the doctors!

I've been using conventional oil in my 1999 ram 1500 4X4 since it was brand new
after 15 years and over 145,000 miles it's still factory original and still going strong.
new cars or old synthetic oil is too pricey,as if you change your oil at 3,000 mule intervals you are wasting your money if you buy synthetic oil.

145,000 Miles is nothing though. It is age that does it from my experience. Seals fail regardless of mileage. I have to run synthetic in my 318, if I don't the lifters seize and I get allot of varnish buildup. When I rebuilt mine I ended up using a torch to loosen up the lifters so I could rebuild them. It took 6 hours to rebuild all the lifters, this involved cleaning all of the varnish off using brass brushes. I changed my conventional oil religiously every 3000 miles with a proper filter. For the first 100,000 miles I used AGIP oil. Afterward I used valvoline.
