ya know when you get people talking about oil its going to be a fight every time its not bad to use thin oil i use 0-30 in my truck in the coldest time of the year and the hottest part of the year. its not bad to be changeing the different viscosity's but its more if you change the brand that is way worse for the engine. if you want to save yourself the fighting stick with what your truck calls for

OK - one comment, one question:

Comment: Lived in Phoenix for 30 years. I was always told (at leas for the cars I owned) to us a slightly thicker oil during the summer months (10w40) and in the winter months use (10w30).

Question: This is the first big truck I've owned and I'm out of the heat. What's the case for / against using a synthetic oil - or perhaps a blend? Is it that big if a deal to do so? My first oil change is in July - and if it makes that big of a difference I might as well start running synthetic.

I would run the 5-20 Royal purple, I pull a 30' travel trailer in the southern heat with no issue at all. I grow up in Southern Cali in the high dessert and move to Alabama and it gets every bit as hot here as it does in the high dessert of cali. It's about lubrication and how well the oil stays on your bearings and maintains the clearances between the bearing and crank, cam. Also a full synthetic group IV will take the heat better and disperse it.

I like synthetics. I ran a Chev with synthetic 10W-40 all year round with no problems here in Oregon. At 140K, when I pulled the engine to do a bore and stroke, it was in fine shape.

Some people run synthetics in an engine after it has had quite a few miles (+50K or so) on regular oil and experienced leaks at the seal areas. But since your truck is new, this would be a good time to switch.

Synthetics will increase the service interval for an oil change, as they don't break down as quick, and they are a superior lube being blended with more friction reducing components than you can get with standard oil.

Default Oil

Maddog, do you actually know someone who experienced leaks after he started using synthetics in a high mileage truck, or did you just hear of people having leaks?

Do you guys even have a cold time of the year? I can't imagine it enough to switch oil viscosity. wait until you get 30 and 40 below

I used to run 10w40 in the winter and 20w50 in the summer on my old Grand Wagoneer, but that was a tired engine. It was the easiest way to keep the oil pressure up.

I would follow the recommendations in the manual. 5w20. I'm running Mobil 1 full synthetic in my ram now. I haven't typically run synthetic, in the past, but will be giving it a try on this truck.

If your truck is still under warranty wouldn't increasing the interval be a problem ?

If your 1500 is a 2004 as listed in your vehicle information; the manual recommends 10W30 I believe. MDS did not show up on the HEMI till 2005.
