Default Saving the three bigs

Hi..
Couldn't find any opinions here on the rescue funds the US gov't approved to help the three american car makers, flagships of the industry I'd say...

Don't forget one of them is the one in which facilities our beloved trucks were born

Hope this huge amount of money (nearly 14 big-grands) could help them survive and keep their employees happy and productive.

Marcelo ..You want discussion on the "BIG 3" ? Well my $0.02 worth goes like this ...Unless they can become competitive with the other world wide auto producers ( concessions from the UAW ) their dead meat... After 40 years being self employeed I think I know the ingredients to make the perfect business pie and it as follows .. 4 oz. service ...4 oz... of product and 8 oz. of PRICE .. .. A splash of integrity won'y hurt either.Depending on your client base these measurements can be shifted around but they MUST be present or your pie sucks..
Roadie ..
P.S. Bud I liked your Ram but I liked your Lady friend even more ..

I agree, most of the reason they are in financial trouble is pure and simple......................Greed..From the CEO down to the floor workers! Big bonuses, Hourly rates and benefits that add up to(in some cases) to nearly $70! A greedy Union that told the Government they would rather see their workers laid off than take a pay cut!
Now we know why a new truck costs over $30,000!

Hey Rambler ...I couldn't agree more ..30 Grand and they are still losing $1500-2000 per unit...Go figure ..I say let the union dig into their coffers and bail out their own A$$ ...Some of us here in Florida ,( including myself ) have lost their life's savings in real estate and we get zero help...Now they want to turn we retiree's into bag boys at the local super market so we can send our $$$ to Washington to give to the UAW ...I say screw them ...I know ...I know tell'em how I really feel ..
Rambler ..are you near Sandy Creek NY ?

I agree with both of your post. But this is a loan not a "bail out" as of now. The housing got a 700B bail out.

Not wanting to hijack this thread but this I DO want to say ..Lending the big 3 17 billion $$$ is at best a bad loan .Hell we the taxpayer can buy all three corps. for the amount of the loan ..So even if these auto makers can continue to build cars ..Who in the hell can buy them..There already exists a 120 day supply of units.. Making cars and selling cars is two totally different issues .What is really needed is a TAXPAYER bailout ..Making more cars for buyers that cannot afford to buy them is kinda like washing your feet with your socks on..Get it ?? Bass ackwards ..

I look at it this way...better to work out something than to see them fail. Failure, at least as far as the impact on our economy, is not an option.

Is it the right thing to do? Probably not...simply because they are in this position because they are poorly managed, wasteful, behind the competition in design - quality - value and they got greedy.

But don't lay it all at the feet of the management of those firms...look at the unions as well. I like a good organized workforce that protects itself from the predations of disreputable firms and management...but there's greed there as well.

Bottom line? There isn't one. Right now the US automakers look a lot like an alcoholic...who hasn't found rock bottom yet.

They better fix themselves or we are all in for an economic shit storm that will make today's economy look like sunshine and roses for everyone.

Dog I agree with you totally as far as to where to lay the blame. There is plenty to go around for sure . .BUT ..You can change managment and the shared suppliers but they will still not be competitive with the other ,in the States so called foreign car mfgs. The major difference between these car makers IS labor cost/medical & retirement costs ...Granted there exists a very minor difference in quality but that's in the design department .. Remember the big three cannot utilize robotical systems without having to pay full pay for an unlimited time to every union person being displaced ... Tough to blame the management folks when it's really the UAW running things not the shareholders .Better to bust union asses as opposed to those of the taxpayer... Regardless of what occurs within the car makers processes ,until we the people the users of their products can again afford to but new cars ,they'll remain insolvent.. Bottom line is The UAW's greed caused the problem ,let them resolve it... They can do what the always do ...Go on strike till they get their way ...
