Default Engine Swap Q ---- Exhaust

My 360 in my 97 Ram died on me today....its gone to motor heaven. I have a 98 Ram parts truck that runs but I have never driven it down the road.

My ? is....the exhaust manifolds on the new motor are rusty. I dont know if possible overheating could have caused this. My old motor doesnt look anywhere near these. You can actually peel off the rust or whatever it is thats over the manifolds then it looks just like the others. Could it just be mud that has dried up and chipping off? It doesnt feel dirty tho....just looks and feels like rust

Thanks for any help!

Would overheating cause this? The frame and body of the truck arent rusty at all...Does every Dodge have this on it.....on the block it almost seems like paint or some kind of coating....dont want to swap it in and have bad problems...Ive worked on cars/trucks for more than 8 years and they never really look like this.....the truck sat for a year or so but I dont think its just "normal rust"

Sure looks like the truck has been through the ringer it's rust and mud. If you other manifolds are better the those I would use them our you could buy some headers for it.

sat in a driveway for maybe a year.....i plan on using the good manifolds, I just wonder why they look this way, as well as the block. The aluminum has alot of corrosion on it too. Maybe it just went to the beach alot and the ol dodge body and frame is good on rust....i dont know.

Started tearing it apart about 45 mins ago and hope to have it all swapped by Monday......just hoping its good. Good oil pressure though and no knocking. 156k miles

my 99 durango w/ 5.2L and my 96 ram w/ 5.9L both had this nasty rusty muddy paint lookin stuff on the manifolds and some one the block, they ran great and never overheated. i just figured it was common.
