Default a little confused

i bought a 98 ram 5.9 . i knew it had some issues. put a plentum and intake gasket on it. plugs wires cap and rotor. it ran like hammered dog crap when i got but after all that it runs pretty good. the only issue left is when u first crank it. runs great for 1 min or 2. then it starts missing and loping like its got a big cam. once it warms up it will idle perfect. took the iac off to clean it and decided to replace it. the surface where it seated looked pretty bad and it was only $30. wondering if o2 sensor heating circut might be shorting to ground. i have seem them do strange things when that happens. not sure if that would make any difference cause i thought o2 sensor weren't used untill closed loop. usually you get a code when they short and i have no light on and have scanned it. got nothing. any help would be greatly appreciated.

you are correct about the O2. it shouldn't really be used until closed loop. if you just had the intake gaskets replaced, you may have an intake leak. what could be happening is that until the engine warms up and everything expands, there may be some pin holes or whatever that let in more air, messing up the AFR and causing the bad running issues. i've seen that happen on all different types of vehicles, not just dodges. but if it does happen, can be a pain to find the problem, like what's happening to you.

good luck!

i need to do the same things you've done just for piece of mind. truck ran fine before i started tearing into it to fix a coolant leak. hope i can come out on top when finished

It's unlikely you'd have an O2 heater problem without a code. A faulty coolant temp sensor or MAP sensor could also cause this kind of problem.

i fixed the intake a few days ago. i have noticed that in the morning when it cold out it doesn't really do it but when i leave from work after thr temparture outside is warmer it does do it. how about the air charge sensor. never had one go bad but maybe it is telling the pcm it has cold air in the intake when it is warm outside

It's a remote possibility but that particular sensor plays a much smaller part in the fuel calculation than the MAP and CTS.

hey ramtech do you know a cheaper place to buy the map sensor. 70 dollars is about the cheapest i can find. gonna replace that and cts since it only 11 dollars. if it still does it then i wiil know i have short straight to ground somewhere. at least that will be my next idea. man i will hate life if thats it. those are next to impossible to find sometimes

Going cheap with critical sensors is a no no and will lead you to more problems. Your local Dodge dealer is the best choice.

well, you can always buy cheap parts to troubleshoot and then once you find the problem, go buy the good stuff and keep the cheapos as backups when you have to troubleshoot a problem down the road. i did that with a few problem cars and it helped out immensely.

I wouldn't blindly throw parts at it to begin with. Getting it diagnosed is ofter cheaper than the total of the parts used in an attempt to fix the problem.
