Default What octane for the 5.7 hemi 2009

Do they still require 89 octane for the 2009 ram 1500 with hemi? can't use 87?

You can try it but I suspect you'll see some elevated knock retard and engine power will drop off. Most 5.7L owners I know run 89 unless they have a Predator programmer, then they run 91.

You can't expect to hear the "ping" (knock) as the stock programming has a pretty conservative knock retard parameter so power will drop off before you hear the ping.

MFGR's current recommendation for the 5.7L is 89 octane fuel.

What is so funny about this is that when I was running 87 in the Truck I was getting better MPG ...........I then realized that I was suppose to be running 89 and I switched. I now get 1mpg less then before .... Could be the winter fuel also?

Winter blends have less BTU, this is true.. the other side of this coin is the more crude the fuel, the higher in BTU it will be making 87 slightly more powerful but not as knock resistent as 89... don't you love it?

YEP....And I think that as long as I'm not pulling the boat or running the Haayyyy out of it I should be ok....BUT, if the engine has a major issue while there is 87 in it I could be held responsible for the $$$$
