Default Friend's 02 Ram 4.7L Left Oil Filter Seal, Major Engine Damage

A friend of mine has a 2002 Dodge Ram with the 4.7L entire. It has around 60k miles. He religiously maintained the truck including doing his own oil changes.

He completed an oil change last week and accidently left the seal from the old oil filter on and then proceeded to install the new filter. He then drove it for 2-3 days during which time the oil leaked out of the engine. He finally was driving on the highway at around 60mph when the check engine like finally came on. He pulled off and noticed there was a major problem. The oil filter must have worked it's way loose.

End result is major engine damage. Does he have an recourse under the powertrain warranty? Maybe the check engine light should come on sooner? Any chance his car insurance would cover this?

Or is he pretty much screwed?

Thanks for the help.

If a dealer had done the job you'd have a leg to stand on but since he did it himself, ... he's pretty much up the creek, no oar, no paddle, no canoe........

He does not have any recourse to recover his costs. If an oil change company or the dealer had done the work, he could recover his costs to rebuild or replace the engine due to their negligence.

No paddle, no boat, he's sunk on this one, I'm afraid.

hate to say it, but I agree. I did this once on my ex's neon (don't change the oil in the dark when you are in a hurry). She only made it about 15 miles before the oil light came on. So I drove to where she was and changed the oil again (this is how i noticed the old filter seal on there). Luckly she was smart enough to call me so I could tell her to stop right away. It ended up being about 3 quarts low...oops...never had any damage from it tho thankfully. So she always liked to ask me "whos the dumbass" after that haha. I guess that means me!

I'd just put more oil in it and go from there. What could it hurt?

Yep, he is screwed. Guess next he will either be more careful or he will be paying somebody else to do it.
