Default 2004 Ram 1500 hemi bad computer

I bought the truck used in 2006 with about 20,000 miles on it. I have had a few problems ever since I bought it. First thing it did was overcharge the battery, which caused a cell to burst, which leaked acid on the throttle cable, which corroded the outer sheath away and ruined the cable. I got the cable fixed and the battery replaced, and the dealership said they addressed the overcharging issue. Not long after, the engine electrical indicator started randomly dropping to 0, and then returning to normal charge. One day it dropped to 0 and stayed there. The battery never died, and the alternator was not bad (had to replace it to find that out). So that makes it the computer. I took it in to the dealership again, and they said that it was indeed the computer and it would cost me $2000 to replace it, and that the computer was not covered under the 7 year 70,000 mile warranty.

So it has sat in my driveway for a year and a half and has not moved, because I cannot afford $2000 to repair a truck I am already paying $500 a month on.

What I need to know is if I this sounds like the real issue, and if it is should it cost that freakin much to replace a computer module, and finally, is there any way I can replace it myself with moderate mechanical skills?

Please help if you can. Any and all advice would be apprecaited.

First, welcome to the forum. Replacing the computer doesn't take serious mechanical skills. $2000 sounds really steep for a truck puter. What I'd do is check out some of the MOPAR super center websites and get a price, flashed, for your truck with the stock program.

Thanks for the reply. Could you point me in the direction of one or more of these Mopar Super Centers. I googled it and found one place, but could not find stock computers there.

Thanks again.

Find a similar wrecked truck and get that computer. Have it flashed for your VIN. The main Computer is around $1200 new. Installed should be about $1600 total.

I am having a similar problem with my 2004 ram 1500. The voltage meter dropped to low and I have changed the battery and the alternator. I charged the battery after it died on me and the truck ran good for 20 minutes or so. Then the meter went to low again. Can someone please help???

If you are hunting for a new computer get with Chris Squire at hotwireauto.com he specializes in new and used hemi pcm. You can get a flashed used one for $350 and put it on yourself easily. Give him your vin # and he can flash it to the pcm he sends you.
