Unhappy Towing

Hello all. I have a question regarding towing capacity. I have an 08 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4X4 with the HEMI 5.7, towing package and 3.55 gears. My wife would like for us to get a camper. And not just any camper mind you but a 5th wheel camper. My question is what would my towing capacity be with a 5th wheel. I know that 5th wheel couplers are rated for well over 10,000 lbs but what can the truck handle. The Hemi has the power but what will the suspension handle and what about helper springs or supplemental air bags in the rear. Thanks for all your help.

Bud, all I can say is that you will need to look into Helper Springs and Air Bags. You will need a good Brake Controller. The HEMI Trucks all come with 3.92 Axle ratio from what I remember. If you have 3.55's then you may want to look at a smaller tag along camper. My opinion is that if you have to install a 5th wheel hitch or goose-neck hitch, you should have bought a 2500 Frame Truck. Do some searching on the net and you will find all of the needed information. Your Trucks Information should be on the inner door sticker and in the Trucks Info Manual.

If you keep the total weight of the entire truck-trailer under the gross combined vehicle weight rating of your truck you will be OK.
A 5th wheel trailer is MUCH more stable than a tag.
I have towed both, and I prefer a 5th wheel.
Don't skimp on the equipment, get a good trailer bake controller and the correct hitch.
My $.02

Your owner's manual should have the towing specs for a tow behind and fifth wheel load rating. If you can't find the manual or the info, call the dealer service department.

And ditto on what 96-V10 said...don't scrimp on the hitch or the brake controller.

I've towed "fivers" a lot and there are a lot of things to know about owning, towing and parking one. RV.com is a good source of info.

One great way to keep under your max GVWR is to not fill up your water tanks before you leave and drain them down to 1/4 full before you head home. Also, dump those waste tanks before you head out and leave just a little bit of clean water in them.

Good luck!
