Default truck trouble

i have an 04 ram quad cab 4x4 and am experiencing a noise that i just cant find and when i took it to my mechanic it didnt do it i thought it was my front diff or drive shaft but we removed the drive shaft and it still made the noise it sounds like a bad grinding noise but it goes away for a couple days then returns only for a few moments and of course wont do it with a mechanic in the truck has anyone else had a similar problem and any ideas what to check any help would be greatly appreciated

first place to check is the brakes, if its going away and returning then that might be it. also check the dust shield for the calipers. i had problems with that on my 01 ram. it would scrape once in a while. Could be just a hard spot in the rotors. Hope that helps!

thanks for the suggestion i did check the brakes but it isnt them it is a much louder sound than brake noise it sounds more like a differential carrier possibly grinding against the housing but i sure hope not. it could also be the transfer case.

the mechanic at the shop said until he heard the sound he didn want to just guess at what it was since we arent sure wheather its the diff or the transfer case or the tranny or the suspension or even if its the cv joints in the front axles i think i just might try another shop today and see what they think nothing wrong with getting a second opinion it just doesnt seem to want to make any noise when the mechanic takes it for a test drive go figure huh

Is the sound something that's coming from under the hood?
