Default oil pressure trouble!!!

I own a '96 ram 1500 with the 5.9L. Lately I've been having problems with the oil pressure dropping off. It done it for a few days and i had the oil changed in it and it seemed to cure the problem for the past couple of weeks. Now it's starting again but not as bad as before. Pressure drops off to around 20 for a second or so and then builds back to around 40 and stays for quite some time. Does anyone have any clue what could be causing this? Please get back to me as soon as you can.

Thank you,
Grasshopper

Sounds like the oil pump to me. Anyone else is free to chime in though. Can't imagine you would have a blockage already, but I've seen stranger things.

I agree with chithead, unless your leaking a ton of oil which I'm sure you would have noticed. The pickup tube for the oil pump could have started to loosen and rotate to where the pump is picking up air when things slosh around as well.... Also if you're a do-it-yourselfer and end up replacing the oil pump I highly recomend tack welding the pickup tube to the oil pump. A buddy of mine had his pickup tube come loos and fall off...toasted the motor before he realized what was goin on...

It sounds like the oil pick up tube is clogged, It is common on these. It happened to my 95 5.2 I would drop the pan and clean it out before you do any serious damage! It was easy to drop the pan on my 4X4. Cleaned it at 84k and now at 160k no oil pressure problems!

Thank y'all! I can do a lot of repairs by myself, the only problem i have is diagnosing the problems. I can weld like crazy but when it comes to fixing anything on vehicles I'm stumped!! Again thank y'all a lot and hopefully the next time i post it will be to say my truck is cured!

Thanks,
D

check the actual pressure with a manual guage to verify it's actually an oil pressure problem first.I see failing oil pressure sending units all the time especially if it's showing signs of leakage,it's a common problem.I've replaced a few sending unit pig tails too . wiggle test the sending unit pig tail while someone watches the guage for any fluctuations,if so renew pig tail.
