hey guys, I am about to pick up a 1996 ram 1500 with magnum v8, the owner I am talking to is telling me that the truck can only go in reverse its an automatic, the truck wont go into drive at all, do you know what could cause that..sorry for the rookie question. I didnt ask him if the gear shifter wouldnt go into drive, or if it just wont go past reverse. any help is appreciated..thanks

It's either a linkage problem (not expensive) or it's a gear / shift fork problem (very expensive)

Yeah I feel that its a linkage problem, but I wont know till I pick it I will see when I go there, I have found trannies for under 300 bucks...I just hope it something simple so I wont have to empty my wallet on it, but its a great looking truck..has a little body damage and a cracked dash but other than that its a good rig... heres a link to it... he hasnt called me back yet to better explain the issue

Well, for that price, with the low miles on the engine, you can afford to put a few bucks into a tranny. Good luck!

96-V10 is on a distinguished road

Sounds like the forward clutch pack has gone bad to me.
If a trans was allowed to suck air and slip that would be the clutch pack that would be damaged.
