I wouldn't attemp fooling around with refrigerant, unless you know exactly what you are doing. It would be best to take it in and have it recharged.

well, for 3 years I have had it re-charged for $125 each time, so from now on I just want to go buy the $8 can, and put it in myself.

I've done that myself too. It does recommend on the product that I used, to remove any refrigerant that may be in the system before adding the can stuff.

first of all you put in r-134a not freon (r-22) and if you have gauges you can just take all of it out and you can either go get a can at your local supply house or put in 7oz if you have a jug of 134a i just recharged my service van i do hvac for work

I meant r-134a, I just wrote freon

Thanks again. is it only 7oz. or do I need to measure the lowside pressure to a certain gauge?

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but releasing even r-134a refrigerant into atmosphere is still not acceptable. You should have this reclaimed from the system using a reclaimer and then vacuum the system down to 500microns before attempting to recharge. Just the fact that you have had this system recharged 3 times tells me that it is in need of service and that the shop you have taken it to has not done their job properly and repaired the leak. Get the leak fixed first and then recharge your system!
