I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 doing same thing. Cold start in the morning. Idles up and down for awhile then I drive away and all is ok.

Still bugs me.

May want to start by cleaning the throttle plate and throttle body bore . You may find out it is extremely dirty . This is one of the most overlooked things when a vehicle won't idle correrctly . Try not to use carb cleaner . There is a throttle plate cleaner that you can purchase from the parts store . I like to use an old tooth brush and reach down and give it a good scrubbing . Don't spray alot of cleaner without occasionally starting the motor up and keeping it from getting flooded . Let me know how you make out . Talk to ya soon . Tom .

I also am experiencing this on my 98 5.9. It doesn't rev nearly as high. I idle at about 600rpms, when its cool (sitting overnight) I start it when its about 45* and itll idle at about 1000, then lope a lot about 650-700. Sounds pretty cool though Lol.

If you clean your throttle body and bore be CAREFUL with the straw applicators. Recently had a guy on here cleaning his and the straw fell of, and was shot in by the spray, not good!

Default Surging at start up

When I start it in the morning it revs up to about 1600 RPM (normal cold start I believe) then instead of slowly dropping to normal idle speed as it warms, it bounces between 1000 and 1600 rpm about 1/2 dozen times. Eventually it settles to normal idle speed and it only does this when it's cold - and by that I mean sitting overnight, temps around 40 to 50 degrees. Seems to operate normally otherwise. I need this rig to run good for a long time so I really want to nip any problems in the bud.

Any help/advice is appreciated!

Thanks,
Ed
I had the same problem with my 2001 ram 1500, 5.9, I changed the Throttle Position Sensor ( got mine at auto zone $35.00 easy to change) and that cured my surging problem. My surging started at about 90K.

While driving, it might jump between 550-650 RPM, but it is not noteacible. However, when I rev up the engine about a half dozen times say to about 4500/5000 RMP, the problem goes away for about 2-3 days, then it's back.

I've been told my best bet is to clean or replace the Idle Air Controller (IAC). It's supposedly located on the throttle body. I can't see it just by looking uder the hood. I have not removed/unscrewed anything yet. Anyone have any idea what part of the throttle body it's located at?

Any help provided is much appreciated.
At work we replace Dodge IAC's on our vans with a tune up. We have had dozens of them fail.

Same problem with my 06 4.7. However, the problem exists at any temp. Yesterday it happened after parking from a 15 mile run. I didn't have the problem until I replaced the plugs at 30k. I replaced with OEM plugs and now have 50k on the truck. I also noticed a drop of about 1 mpg at the same time. I have not had any codes show up.

Had the same problem with my 06 4.7L. I replaced the TPS last week and so far, so good! Overall performance and mpg is up. I didn't realize how bad it was. I did NOT buy the part from auto zone, have had several bad experiances with their parts.
