Default Local dealer's sales gimmick

One of the local dealers around here has a gimmick that got me to go in and look at a truck that I not only have no need for, but can't afford, nor do I really even want it. I went to look anyway.

Here's the deal....

Buy one of several selected 2009 Ram 3500 trucks (there is also a 2500 4X4), and you'll receive your choice of one of several 2008 PT Cruiser or Caliber program cars (each got less than 20K) and you will only pay tax, title, and license.

Went down and looked at an '09 Laramie 3500 single rear wheel. It was a nice truck, had most of the bells and whistles, but NOT the nav for around $50K. I told the salesman that the only way I'd consider it, was if they threw in the nav for free (he claimed it'd cost $2500).

It seems in order to get the freebie car, you must agree to give all the rebates and incentives back to the dealer (it's about $6500) around here. They also seem to think that you must pay what is on the sticker (which I never do).

I don't need a 3500, didn't really even want one, but it was a deal that I had to check out. I left the stealership, telling the salesman that I had to think about it, and that I'd call if I decided to go with it. He said that he'd "work on his boss" to try to get him to come off the price of the truck. I sort of nodded and told him "sure, you do that. If he wants to deal, then give me a call".

I got to thinking about it when I got home. I've put too much time and effort into tweaking my '08 so that's uniquely mine, don't wish to start over.......yet

Man, I would consider that too if it wasn't for just buying my truck back in August last year. Especially if it was Mega Cab!

Not a bad gimmick. I'd be interested in a new truck but don't care for either the Cruiser or the Caliber (no offense to any Cruiser or Caliber owners here...but they just don't appeal to me).

Seems this might pull a few folks in though.

Not a bad gimmick. Heck, there was a KIA dealer in Baton Rouge, who, a while back was offering a buy one get one free deal, buy an SUV and get a car free! Everybody thought I was crazy until they heard the commercial for themselves.

Yeah, I have heard of that being done before, can't remember who or where, but I think they were giving a Caliber away with the purchase of something else (sorry Licia!). Things are going to be a little crazy for a while until the real competition between brands comes back, and hopefully these "new" companies will be a lot leaner, with a more selective lineup of vehicles, but also better quality.

Might consider the Cruiser - but only if it came with 8 clowns who could jump in and out of it.

Good thing to remember is that no car dealer is going to give you any kind of a 'deal'. The best you can hope for is a gentle screwing!
