Default Harmonic balancer/vibration dampener

Hi all , i have a 99 ram slt with a 318 and when you rev up the engine the harmonic balancer and pulley move about a 1/4 inch forward toward the fan , is this normal or do i have a bigger problem at hand? I talked to a mechanic in my area he said it was normal....but i also talked to a guy at one of the local dodge dealership service department and he said it should not move at all...so any help would be much appreciated.
thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to RamForumZ! Sorry to hear about your problem, but that pulley will tend to wobble or "walk" with time and age as the insulation wears out on the damper itself. It is best to have it replaced. I had that problem with my Jeep, and it is cheaper to replace the pulley than the radiator! Good luck! Typically on Chrysler vehicles, it is a three pronged pulley with a keyway, so a steering wheel puller should work in place of a harmonic balancer tool, but only if you are mechanically inclined and know what you are doing. Otherwise, I would have it professionally done.
