Default egr valve

hello, I have an '04 ram 1500 with 5.7l, and am getting a code for the EGR valve. it looks simple enough to replace but I heard the stealership must flash the ecm on the truck immediatly after replacement. what is the reason for this? and has anyone replaced one themselves with out flashing the ecm? did it work ok?
I believe there was a TSB for this problem, what is the companys or dealerships responsibility for TSB's?

thanks in advance

Mine check engine light's been on for a while now, code for EGR valve. Already have the part, waiting for a couple of free hours so I replace it. Should be pretty straight-forward, and I'd say any OBDII scanner/flasher should be able to reset it.

I've got a buddy who replaced his own EGR valve on his '04 Hemi Ram and has had no problems. No flash needed.

Default egr valve

I have a 2005 ram 1500 5.7 engine. It will not start up without having to give it gas. Driving at about 15 mph, between 1100 and 1300 rpm, engine surges. Check engine lite came on. Is this a symtom of needing an egr valve????

Thanks in advance.

It could be . But it could also be a multitude of other problems . Is your check engine light on ? If it is get the code out of it and lets diagnose that first and see what happens . Let us know . Don't forget to go to the newbie section next and introduce yourself . Get your official greeting . Talk to ya soon . Tom

About 2 months ago i had similar problems to some of you guys above. my truck had a rough idle at stop lights and was tearing up my gas mileage (even driving like an old lady)and had the check engine light on but the only code it gave was the EGR Valve. The mechanic at the Chevy dealer i work at said it could be a number of things but we started simple we changed the IAS (Idle Air Speed) Motor which solved the idle problem and the EGR was replaced but to no resolution. Im still dealing with the EGR problem 2 months later!!! When the check engine light turns off i have crappy gas mileage and my power dissapears but when its on i have normal gas mileage and normal power. You dont understand how frustrating this thing is! i dont know what to do anymore! even the mechanic at the DODGE dealer i took it to was scratching his head and couldnt diagnose my problem. all he could say is try replacing the EGR but the thing is ive bought 2 new valves in the past couple months! at $40 each time to not even fix my problem doesnt exactly make me the happiest guy in the world. im kinda happy to know im not the only one having EGR code problems. My mechanic has an idea on what to check next so if i hit the problem i'll be sure to be everyone here know immediately.

Keep us in the loop, I have the same problem. My check engine light is my best friend these days. Sad but true...

Have you or your mechanic tried cleaning the return tube from the EGR to the intake?? That is a commonly looked over problem....actually it was what was wrong with mine, but since I was there already, I changed the Valve as well
