Default Looking at getting into a Dodge....

I currently own a Jeep GC but would like a bit more room and more hauling/tow capabilities. I've found a few 06-07 1500 QC 4x4's, some are big horn, some are 4.7 and others are 5.7. The one I have my eye on is an 07 Grey Big Horn QC 4x4 but it has the 4.7. I know most people will say to get the HEMI but how underpowered is the 4.7? I know it's great in the WJ Jeep! The truck has like 22k miles and they want 20,000 for it. I'd be doing a Tuner/catback/CAI/leveling kit, etc. Also, I need to tow a 3500 race car on a open trailer. Would this 4.7 truck be enough for that? I could do a gear swap too. Thanks so much!

i drove a little 4 door dakota with the 4.7L in it, and it was a DOG.
i would definatly go with a hemi, but if your plan on doing a gear swap and a bunch of little power adders then you shouldnt have any problems.
it would still be alot eaiser just to get the hemi, then when you do all the mods to it, you wont just be where you want , youll be extremely excited and happy

Default Go for an "09

Right now all the Dodge dealerships are getting rid of there stock as there will be no more "09,s made for the remainder of the year.
They await the "10,s and are giving insane incentives!!
I bought a "09 quad cab st with the Hemi and the 3.92 rear en in it for 10,000 dollars off!!!!
Doesn't have a lot of bells but hey add them later if you need them.
Sticker was 33,090 and landed in it for 23,000.
Go to the dealers and haggle.
Plus the "09.s have the all new coil rear suspension and ride like a dream.

You won't be happy with the 4.7 as a tow rig. Just not enough power and torque. By the time you modded it with all the goodies and changed out gear sets, you'd more than spend the difference between the 4.7 and the 5.7 with 3.92's in it, which makes a great tow combination.

I believe that by the time you compare what you'd spend on the 4.7 and what you'd save by buying the 5.7 and not have to mod it, you could spend some money on getting a DiabloSport Predator programmer and still be bucks ahead.

Did they change the 4.7 just for 2008? I have it in my 2008 and am VERY pleased with it. 310hp makes a big difference over the previous one I owned.

I'd check new prices. I bought my '08 new for $22k and it listed for over $37k That was in december though. I'd go with the hemi.

i drive a 2002 4.7 and its a fine tow pig. i tow up to 5800 lbs on a regular basis with no problems and i maintain 70+ on the highway. the newer 4.7s are much more powerful than mine. if the price is right and you like the truck. dont let hemi vs 4.7 stop you.

How does one go about finding out what kind of gear he has? I have an '06 4.7 and I'd like to find a site, or where on the vehicle I could find all of the information regarding what it has on it. But I agree with the other 4.7 owners, I can tell you it has quite a bit of power when needed. I don't have a tow package, but for hauling it's a great work truck!

I think the Dealer can tell you from the VIN#. They will pull up a build sheet and that should have the gearing on it from the factory. Either that or jack up the rear end, put it in neutral, and turn the wheel to see how many times the driveshaft turns.
