Default Do tonneau covers make people curious or keep them out?

Hi,

Here's my interesting paranoid dilemma: :-) I have always owned SUV's. My only other pickup, before my new 2002 Ram Quad Cab, was a 1953 Dodge 3/4 ton which was not a daily driver! Out of habit, I automatically lock all of my vehicles. Now that I have the bed to worry about (if something is in there), do I need a tonneau cover? Do bed covers in general make people think that I have something in there that is worth locking up?

I would be curious to hear stories from all of you (my fellow Ram owners!) to see if anyone has really had a problem with someone breaking into a tonneau cover or stealing anything out of the bed without a cover!

Thanks from a pickup newbie,
Daniel

My ex had several thousand dollars worth of tools stolen out of the back of our old Dodge, so we took the rollbars out and just put in a locking toolbox. That seemed to do the trick, but never had a tonneau cover.

No, especially not when you lose a brand new Husqvarna chainsaw!

from my experience, it will only deter opportunistic criminals (those that would walk by, see the goodies, then steal them). if someone wants to get something out of it, or they know there is something back there, having the tonneau cover will only increase the property damage you incur (if they want in they will get in). i wouldn't let this issue determine whether or not you get a cover. if you want one, get one.

Even if there's nothing in there, someone will probably still pop the cover off. Someone messed up a perfectly good roll cover on our truck to find out, tada, nothing in the bed. Thankfully rolltrax (retrax? I can't remember) took care of it for us.

I don't care much of any loss its all material things.. I just only hope they don't try to open the tailgate with the handle if the alarm is on...zap good all

I have had covers and you can not put anything worth anything in there. Cheap stuff like straps and chains have never been taken out of my truck. I also do not have a locking tailgate. You can get locking tailgates, but people will damage the cover thinking there is something in there when it is empty. So get a cover and just do not put valuables back there.

I have had a tonneau cover in my previuos 01 Dakota and had no problems, but I did not keep anything valuable in there. If you want security go with a locking tool box. Caps and other hard covers are good, but only to a point. Locks keep honest people out. If someone seriously wants your stuff, they will get it.
