Default Removing Headlight Assembly

Had a question,

I'm looking to paint my headlights black and am wondering if anyone has some good directions and removing the assembly and taking it apart. I have an 08 SLT and downloaded the repair manual but it doesn't have anything in it about removing or taking apart headlight assemblies. Also any recommendations on paint? Thanks in advance.

Chris

The '08 headlights have the same mounting as my '07, so there's 3 screws and a clip. Open the hood, and on the assembly there's 2x 10mm socket heads and also a 10mm one in the wheel well behind a rubber grommet. Then wrap a flatblade screwdriver in a towel or black tape and pry the corner closest to the cab to pull it out of the clip. On the driver side there's a temp sensor being held by one screw so remember to put this back when you're done.

I'd have to look at my old lights to see how to take them apart, but that'd be a few days since i'm out of town right now.

As for color, any clear coat mixed with some black paint and sprayed on the inside works well. A few of my buddies have used the House of Kolor candy black and reduced it a whole bunch and it worked well too; they sprayed on the outside of the lens cuz another buddy had his yellow on him since he used a no-name-brand clear coat.

Just be aware that your headlights will not be as powerful at night and you will probably have to pick up some driving lights to see properly.

You have to bake them in the oven and bring lots of patience. I tried it on my 07's and f-ed them up. So I bought the NightRunner lights and tinted the exterior to hide the amber reflector.

Thanks alot for the info, great pic! I think I'm just gonna end up buying projectors with halo LED's anyway. Once I get them I guess I could practice with my stock ones and see how they turn out. Thanks again!

Depending upon the year and model of your car, you need to remove the front grill. Remove the screws from the top or sides of it. Then remove the screws that secure the headlight assembly. You should unplug the wiring from the back of the assembly. Check this out for more info: How to remove headlight assembly.
