Question 97 Ram 1500 4X4 Rear Shackle Replacement

My right rear shackle snapped and the leaf spring is resting up against the bed frame. I ordered and received 2 new shackles (dodge OEM) went under the truck to attempt the replacement. I started with the lower bolt that holds the shackle to the frame mount and got the nut off fairly easy. The bolt does not come out of the bracket and it appears to have a star recess in the head (very rusty though) and nothing I have will fit in it. Does this bolt have threads on the shank that screw into the bracket?? I had no luck using a hammer to tap it out there was a hex on the outter end past the threads that I put a socket on and tried to see if I could unthread it out of the bracket but it just sheared off the hex end piece.

My next attempt was going to be to grind off the head of the bolt and see if I could then get the bolt out of the bracket.

Has anyone changed/removed this bolt Is it threaded into the bracket?? or is Mine just rusted from never being removed??

Any help is appreciated as I haven't even attempted to really get the top bolt off, when I tried to move it with a wrench you can feel it moving in the rubber not comming apart just moving in the rubber with pressure and goes back when released.

Any help or tricks are appreciated. I did notice when I ordered the parts that the OEM bolts are no longer available so if I can get these out I will buy new hardened bolts to reassemble.

Thanks

What happens is the bolt rusts to the sleeve, There is the spring eye, rubber bushing, metal sleeve and the bolt. At the shop I work at we use an air hammer to try to loosen up the rust, Sometimes it works, sometimes we have to burn out the bushing and replace it. They can be a real pain in the rear!!! Good luck.

Yup, it's rusted in. If you can't drive it out, you have to burn up the bushing to get the bolt out. Good luck!

Thumbs up

Thanks everyone for your replys I appreciate it. Sorry I got back so late. I couldn't beat it out so I ended up bringing it to my mechanic and he used his torch and like you said burned it out. It was a real pain.

All back together now with new shackles and bushing and bolts, what a difference when you're actually riding on the springs!!

Thaks again
