Default Rear end gear swap??

I just bought a 2001 Cummins Ram 2500 from my Dad and I want to know what is the best way to swap for a taller rear end gear. I do no plan on using the truck for heavy duty and it will make a few trips to the dump and a few highway trips from North carolina to Florida. I was hoping to pick up a few miles pe gallon witha a rear end swap. The current gear is a 3:55. A guy at work is swapping his gears in his 02 Ram 1500 from a 3:09 o 4:10 but I don't think I can use his rear end can I? Is there anyother donor I can swap a rear end with?

2WD or 4wd ? If you have 4x4 , you will have to change both rears . Then you'll have to have your speedometer also calibrated for the gear change . For highway driving , I wouldn't change a thing . If you want it to pull down trees or small homes then go with a 4.10 or 4.56 to 1 gears . You're actually gearing the truck lower for maximum low end power , but then you're gas mileage will suffer . Go luck with you're decision .

It is a single cab 2WD. My main goal is gas milage. I know it is a 2500 series truck but I don't need the heavy duty for what I want to do but you can't get the diesel in a 1500.

They have the programmers for the diesels which are 5 step adjustable . Try that and see what that will do for ya . If I owned a diesel I would try that before doing a gear change . Alot cheaper going this way .

I talked to one of the mechanics at work and he said the 3:55 gears are good enough and I probably would not really get what I wanted by doing a gear change [I also can't use the gears from a 1500 in my 2500]

Since you're talking gears I'll jump in here and ask a similar question. I've got an '03 1500 with 3:55 gears and a 5 speed manual, 2WD quad cab and I need a bit more towing capacity. The 3:92 rear end was an option on my truck so is that swap pretty simple? Drop one and put in the other?

If you can find a used diff in the j yard at a good price , yeah . If you need to purchase a ring and pinion now your looking at having somebody who knows what their doing set it up . Another option would be get a diff out of a '03 1500 with Off-Road package . That rear has 4.10's . Wise choice if your going with taller tires . My '01 has 4.10's because of the Off-Road package .
