Default Hypertech tuner

After I took over my Dad's 2001 Cummins Ram 2500 my Uncle gave me his Hypertech tuner for it. He had already put the tune in the truck so I didn't know that I had test drove the truck with the tune in it. After we took the tune out I was not able to tell the difference. A friend at work who is into drap racing and owns his own performance turbo shop told me to gte rid of the Hypertech Tuner cause it will do more harm than good. He said he has a 6 level programmer that will allow me to choose from economy to all out performance. Has anybody else used a Hypertech tuner? Have you heard that the Hypertech is no good? My goal is to get the best fule milage ad reliability out of the truck I can.

The only reason I am going to keep the Hypertec is to read my fault codes. But I will be looking for a tuner that I can afford but will also give me a selection of options that might actually make a difference.
