Default Programmers

Howdy Everyone,

Just joined the forum and also just bought a 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 crew cab, long bed, 4x4, drw, 6 spd manual. I bought it to pull a 38 ft 5th wheel as I basically live on the road working. My question is: Do I need a programmer or not? It looks as though they really help mileage and performance. I'm all for that. Out of all the products out there which one is "the right one"?

My son is telling me bully dog PMT but I could really use some actual user input to help me out. Thanks for the help in advance.

Heard Bully dog is good . Not sure , but if Diablosport makes one for the diesel you may want to look that way also . They to have a good product .

Before you invest in a programer I'd say get some gauges, atleast EGT and boost. After that an intake and exhaust. These mods will give you the platform to build off of and get the most out of what ever programer you decide on.

I have a Edge Juice/Attitude on my truck, I like it. I have heard great things about Smarty's also.

I agree...Bully Dog is a good one. Check out the Edge products as well. Don't forget the EGT and boost gauges. Well worth the money. Some of the Bully Dog and Edge products have displays for those functions...you just have to install the pyrometer for the EGT reading and a sensor for the boost function.

Thanks for the input. I actually got a Banks exhaust (uninstalled) with the truck. I'm waiting to install it until I know what progammer I'm going to use. Not sure I'm liking how loud the truck will get with the Banks installed.

Also the Bully Dog seems to have all the tricks, EGT, Pre and Post Turbo temps, turbo pressure etc. With that system no gauges are necessary.

It is apparent that more research is necessary!

Go with the Banks tuner and intake. they are by far the best on the Diesels...

For what you will be useing your truck for going with a system that has built in gauges is good and you can set those systems to defuel if your EGT's get to high which is nice when towing heavy. the Banks exhaust should not be to loud you can always put on a longer muffler that will quiet it down. I would also look for an intake. You can cut the baffles out of yours and that will help the flow of air and just go with a bigger filter unit; AFE makes a great setup.

when you upgrade your exhaust, upgrade your intake, cant put more out if you cant get more in. i went with the afe stage 3 and have been very pleased, also rinning 5" exhaust, and an edge programmer, and very pleased with my setup. greatly increased my performance, and mileage. all i need now are some guages, working on that tho.

We did Bully Dog, Triple Dog GT but we are a 2500 and will tow occasionally. Not everyday kinda' towing. I like it. I only set it on Performance until we upgrade the exhaust.

Well, if you have a Banks system to put on the truck (and that is good stuff) I'd check into the Banks programmer as well. The kits are designed as integrated parts with each other. I think you'll get the best bang for your buck by going all Banks vs. mixing components.

But I may be wrong...
