Question 05 1500 Rear Diff Bearings

Has anyone replaced the bearings in the rear differential in an '05 1500 4x4?? I went to replace the wheel speed sensor in mine and the cap that covers the copper windings broke off from the rest of the part while it was still inside the diff. I thought that it had a seal on it because I couldn't pull it out of the diff. I drove my truck for just over a day but eventually it must have came out and my diff fluid along with it. The final result is smoked bearings. So far. I haven't cracked it yet so I don't know if there is any damage to the teeth and gears.

So I guess my question is, has anyone had to replace them and if so, what was the process and cost??

Well I found a shop in town, Northern Transmission, to do the work for me. He quoted me between $400-$500 CDN for the bearings. He showed me what to look for when deciding if the gears are too worn and would need replacing, luckily mine were fine. I got a couple quotes from a few other places Mr. Transmission and another local garage, G&H Auto. Mr. Ts quote was between $800-$2000, depending on if it would need a full rebuild or just bearings. G&Hs quote was $1500+labor because they would have just slapped on a used diff.
Just thought I'd give the 21 readers of the thread an update and for others who may be looking for some figures for their diff jobs! Hope this makes people think twice or three times about which shop they choose to use.

Happy mudding!
