Default Fuel guage not working properly

my dad has a 03 1500 with the 4.7. he just brought this to my attention and i thought it was interesting and was curious if anyone else has had the same problem and would know how to fix it. he says that the fuel guage will sometimes wil show empty (low fuel light on and all) even though he just filled it up. sometimes he can turn the truck off and back on and it work fine, but when that stopped helping it he called me. i didnt have a voltage tester with me to check the wires. i checked the wires to make sure they were connected and no shorts. all good. this took some time and i was getting tired(frustrated). it was about that time that i thought about the old chevys and their fuel pump issues. when the fuel pump went out you could kick the tank and sometimes make them work a little longer. so i kicked the tank a few times and the guage moved a little, kicked it a few more times and gave it some time and it works again. i was thinking the sending unit but im not sure if that is the problem. Any help is appreciated! If my uncles (who are die hard chevy enthusiast) here about this i will never live it down!!! until i have to pull them out of a hole. AGAIN!! lol

It could very likely be the sending unit.

If the float is sticking, or bent somehow, that would give you the problem, and would move when kicked.

If you can do a volt test on the wires, post your voltage right out of the tank, halfway down, and at the gauge (or as close as you can)
