Default Trany problem 99 ram

I have a ram 1500 5.9l v8 that when I push hard on the gas to pass or something like that the rpms shoot up very high in the red. Other then that it shifts very well. The trans fluid is red and doesn't have a burnt smell or odd smell of any kind. I am not sure about the filters condition or if that is something I can change myself. Has anyone had this problem or any ideas on what the problem could be?

yea i have a 98 and the same thing has been happening to me. but now it not only rev's way up like that it sticks out of first sometimes and also doesn't like to downshift out of overdrive. Stupid overdrive...robs all of the power.

I put some Lucas Tansmission Fix in it a couple days ago and it seemd smoother. But the overdrive still acts the same as it did before no changes there. The truck does it worst when it is in the first 10 minutes of operation. also when it should be shifting between 1st and 2nd gears it goes back and forth real quick like it doesn't know if it should shift yet or not. The truck I think is confused so maybe a miss communication someplace. But it does seem as the longer I drive it and the warmer the trany get the better it does.

I'd do a fluid change, filter change and check signals between the computer and the Transmission Control Module.

is there a hook up point in between the computer and TCM to check the signal?

Well I have an appointment woth Sanford Transmissions tuesday at 0815. They are going to do a diagnostic test on it as see if they can figure out what my problem is. The issues are getting worse when I first start it now and try to move in first gear it seems to slip a little as if I am not going to go anywhere. I really think the trany is on its way out. but wierdy enough the warmer the trany gets the better it operates. I am getting a burnt smell now on the dip stick. The fluid is still red so hopefully its not to bad.

none of you tow with the overdrive on, do you?

I was told by a guy who was an engineer for chrysler til the late 90s, that said what screws up these transmissions is people towing stuff with the overdrive on.
Supposedly, besides that, they can take some abuse, for a long time.

I'm hoping he's right, since, my ss/t has 140,000 miles and the original tranny, no problems. (knocks wood)

Being 10 years old, it could just be ready for an overhaul. I had a guy that worked for me with a 2004 Silverado that had the same problem at around 100,000 miles. A $1,500 overhaul fixed him right up, of course he still had a Chevy after he spent his money. Good luck. I've got 120,000 miles on my 05 hemi with lots of nitrous suppers. Probably living on borrowed time.

i just replaced the filter and fluid on my 98 and after i did that it would not shift out of first no matter what i did. Today i am changing the governor solenoid and one of the other sensors that i forgot the name of...hopefully that will work or else i am going to have to get it rebuilt. :/
