Default 5.9L vs 5.9L

Hey guys...

This is something I have found really odd, and I don't quite understand.

As many of you know, I have a 98 Ram SS/T, with a 5.9L (360), rated at 245hp stock.

Well, for a short while, my dad owned a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited, with a 5.9L rated at 245hp.

(that Jeep was fast as hell, and the scariest freaken thing I've ever ridden in. 245hp DOES NOT belong in a top heavy vehicle thats all time AWD...lolP)

Anyway, the thing I don't understand is....my SS/T says it requires regular unleaded fuel. Says that on the fuel door, on the gauge cluster, and in the owner's manual. That Jeep Grand Cherokee, however, said Premium Unleaded fuel Only all over it.

Both were rated at the same hp, and same compression ratio...so...what would be the difference?

The SS/T doesn't ping at all...so........

I'm just trying to figure out what was done differently since both are same year and everything.

ANy ideas?

That is a good question, to which I don't have an answer, but worth looking into just to settle the curiosity, and yes, I do believe there is someone on here who mentioned before they had a link to Chrysler. As soon as I can find the link, I will get it for ya'.

Sounds to me like the Truck and Jeep have different PCM Engine Calibrations from Dodge and Jeep. They probably assumed that the truck would be used for Tow and allowed for more Timing changes on the fly to retard timing if spark knock was detected....... Or just simply Jeep wants people to use PREMIUM Fuel so that they can claim better longevity or just have a classy appeal to it???? If the Jeep pings with 87 or 89 then the Compression, Spark Timing, or ECM's are different....?

That is weird. I don't know dude

I got a reply from Chrysler regarding production numbers on the SS/T finally...and here is what they said...

Dear Alex:

Thank you for contacting the Chrysler Customer Assistance Center regarding the Dodge Ram.

We are delighted to learn of the satisfaction you have obtained from owning your vehicle and are glad to read of your interest in our product. In response to your email regarding production numbers, we would like you to know that production numbers are considered proprietary information. It's all in the factory tuning. I have an 05 QC4x4 Hemi Ram and an 05 Dodge Magnum RT hemi and my brother has a beautiful Hemi Jeep Commander. All three are great vehicles, but the hemis are totally different. If you want to drive a scary Jeep, try a SRT8, they are total insanity!

lol...yeah, this Jeep supposedly did 14 seconds new. A matter a fact, theres a commercial on Youtube for it that says, at the time of its production, it was the fastest SUV in the world...lol

And, yeah, I was thinking it was the PCM or something....hmm....I wonder if they're actually more powerful (even though they rated them the same [could've been an insurance trick ]) lol

And, 98sst....I have no clue what kind of response that it. Did you supply your vin #?

Also...whats the email address you sent that to? I'm going to send them an email myself...though concerning our dashes.
